How about a 3-way deal:

Boston gets Murton & Patterson from the Cubs

San Diego gets Crisp from Boston and Cedeno from the Cubs

Cubs get Greene from San Diego

plus whatever tweaking needs to get the deal done.

Cubs would then need to sign Fukudome for RF.

I think the original idea was to trade for someone decent to play SS, so just trading for Crisp (while not necessarily a bad idea in itself) kind of defeats the purpose. That said, I agree with whoever said that deal isn't good for the Padres (I'm not so sure it's good for the Cubs either, value-wise - Murton, Patterson and Cedeno is a good bit to pay just for Greene, but if the Cubs aren't going to play any of them, I suppose it's best to trade them).

Can't see the Padres agreeing to that trade.

The only SS option I see being a good fit for the Cubs and being available for a reasonable price is Miguel Tejada.

However, if that deal would be of interest....I'd try:

Greene to the Cubs.

Murton and Dempster to the Red Sox

Crisp and a Cubs pitching prospect (Veal, Gallagher, Hart) to the Padres.

Cubs probably may have to pay a little of Dempster's salary too. Sox have been looking for a setup man for Papelbon. SD could be interested in some close to the majors pitching.

I really dont like the sub .260 average, but the 97 RBI suggests that he can come through when it counts. Just the same though, Id assume Theriot, Infante, and maybe even Cedeno battle it out for short while we find a CF or RF who can hit.

You sure about that one?

In this morning's Tribune, Lou sounded like Theriot is the SS and they're looking for a lefty SS to sub for him on occasion. I wonder what Cedeno has to do to have a real shot at playing because his upside is certainly better than Theriot's. Of course, there have been times he (Cedeno) has looked brutal at times in the majors.

How does everyone view Theriot's full ceiling? I see him as a .740 OPS guy with speed. I have him improving to the point where he reaches replacement level someday. I'm all for spending resources for an upgrade. I'm glad that Izturis and Matsui aren't considered upgrades. Tejada is intriguing though we'll be in the same boat soon if we go that route.

I think that the aquisition of Infante may make Cedeno trade bait. Certainly hes not the type of guy they would be able to build a big trade around, but a lot of teams may be interested in him as part of a package.

Isn't he already 27? That someday better be soon.

A .740 SS isn't replacement level. That's an average SS around the league.

I can see Theriot having .750 years, but I think normally he'll average closer to 700.

Theriot is 27, and is likely to be exactly what he was last season. Below replacement level.

Not very high. He's 27 already. I see him averaging .275/.340/.360 type numbers. Not terrible, but not starting material.
