Player A - .271/.324/.469, 104 OPS+, 192 HR, 711 RBI (11 seasons)

Player B - .280/.329/.455, 100 OPS+, 164 HR, 623 RBI (9 seasons)

One of these guys just got a 5 year, $80M deal from the Angels, while the other was traded to Detroit for Omar Infante.

Yeah but you forgot to add "robbed Barry Bonds in an all-star game" to Hunter's resume. That's worth about 15 million itself.

Its too bad they have Vlad in the OF. If you had Hunter, Matthews Jr., and Anderson all playing at once you'd have an overrated OF at every spot.

I've heard speculation the Vlad's days in the OF are numbered because of recent injury problems. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Guerrero who ends up at DH.

That's what I think too with Vlad playing the OF every once in a while.

It sure does seem like baseball is being run by a bunch of idiots. 5 years and $90 million for Hunter? That's ridiculous.

Ridiculous is being kind. That makes the Soriano deal look good by comparison.

Wow.

However, it is easy to see why this came out of nowhere. Torii and his agent probably literally jumped on that contract offer.

it's still not as bad as the Juan Pierre deal.

that would be just about it

For the record, GMJr is a better fielder than Torii. I'm thinking this may mean the Cabrera deal fell thru. I'd look for him to go to the Dodgers now.

Or they are getting the players they need to make a push and Hunter was one of the pieces. How much do they have left to spend...did they claim a strict number that they were going to stick by?

This makes absolutely no sense to me. Just to get this straight the Angels have spent 140 mil for 5 years on two CFers. Neither of these CFers give you much offense as well. Horrible, horrible contract.

This deal baffles me. I thought they threw stupid money at Matthews last season, now they do it again for someone who plays the same position. If they aren't used in CF, bot Matthews and Hunter have even less value.

Looks like Moreno is collecting CFers like Jim collects second basemen.

according to revised zone rating, GMJr was actually the worst defensive center fielder in the american league last season, and i think dewan's plus/minus system ranked GMJr among the worst last season too. torii hunter was slightly better last season defensively, and in 2006, they both equally sucked defensively.

though interestingly enough, in 2006 coco crisp was the worst defensive center fielder according to revised zone rating, but in 2007 he was the 4th best. so who knows.

Let's correct the situation and deal Infante for Hunter plus cash.

I don't understand this signing at all. Matthews is a very good defender in CF. I can understand the Dodgers being fed up with Juan Pierre's crappy defense in CF and looking for an alternative, but the Angels didn't have that problem.

For those of you wondering, Soriano's getting paid $1m less per year than Hunter.

Yeah, but for 3 more years than Hunter, and he'll make $19M in those years, and he'll be old.

Indeed, but I'm getting the feeling that Soriano's contract will become more and more tolerable as the years go on in terms of money if these kinds of contracts become the norm.

I'll bet a lot of people thought that about Sosa's deal too. Let's hope it's a big upswing then and not a slow rise or decrease.

You're right, but it's humorous to see Torii Hunter get paid more than Soriano. It's a terrible deal for the Angels for a player that isn't that great. I really don't understand their line of thinking so far this offseason.
