The Cubs, continuing their search for a left-handed hitting infielder with speed, are considering free-agent second basemen Luis Castillo and Kaz Matsui. The Mets and Astros are also talking to Castillo, while the Rockies are trying to retain Matsui. Both Castillo and Matsui are switch-hitters. ...

Castillo is better than Matsui, but I still don't understand the sudden need to replace DeRosa. Especially with the glaring holes at SS and the outfield. Unless they think DeRosa or Castillo can play shortstop?

Maybe Lou doesn't like DeRosa.

Neither Castillo nor DeRosa can play SS adequately.

Neither can Theriot... Trying to rationalize Cubs' management's thought process is like trying to dodge cars on a free way blindfolded with the drivers blindfolded as well. It can't be done, but if you attempt it you're going to get hurt.

if Jim Hendry can find two middle infielders better than Derosa, I'm fine with Derosa in a super utility role , which means Hendry hopefully finds a landing spot for Infante.

Maybe they are considering DeRo for RF? Or back to super-sub role and still getting 4-5 starts a week at various positions.

which is a terrible idea. his bat doesn't play in right. he's the best MIF on the cubs, and none of the options they're considering are better than him.

I'd much rather have Castillo, but I still don't unerstand why we need either of them. Who besides Rosenthal has reported our interest in these guys?

In Sunday's Tribune, Phil Rogers suggested that the Matsui speculation might lead to more time for DeRosa in RF. DeRosa is a valuable piece to this team as the regular 2B or a super-sub. Unless Murton is part of some future deal, Murton will outperform DeRosa in RF. Either get Fukudome or a lefty platoon for Murton (Luke Scott, Seth Smith, Ryan Church, etc.). I'm still not sure what Hendry is going to do with his overabundance of middle infielders, especially if the Matsui/Castillo speculation is true. Hopefully he can find a trade partner that needs four 2B in return for a real SS or RF.

This guy is just shooting out names to get interest in his stories. He's seldom right and firmly believes in the blind squirrel find nut theory.

I think you can take the ARod please off your sig now.

Castillo would look really good hitting second... but we already have a guy named Mark DeRosa. Why are the Cubs looking to bring in a new second baseman? I just don't get it.

Wasn't there a Castillo thread like last week? Or was I dreaming about nsbb again?

Oh - and if so, I still don't want Castillo, given that we already have DeRosa. And I certainly don't want DeRo in RF rather than Murton. Jim Hendry is really pissing me off.

Maybe the media is messing with us, knowing Jim Hendry's love for having 18 2b on the roster at one time.

Ha...maybe! I think one writes that Hendry is looking for a second baseman and then the rest come up with their guesses while not even looking to see if the Cubs even need one.

Hendry's got a quota to meet. Plus this way, the Orioles don't have to sign a 2b for the next 5 years, we'll just keep trading them guys like Bynum.

I'm really upset that no one has given props to this analogy yet. Awesome.

All the while Dusty was here I thought it was him who loved having 8000 MI, but apparently it's been JH all along, Walker Harriston Bynum DeRosa Theriot Fontenot Cedeno Womack Grudz and the other 50 I can't think of off the top of my head right now

How could you forget the great Enrique Wilson? Rey Ordonez?

According to Rosenthal and Rogers, having speed and a left-handed bat in the infield seems to be a priority. I like Castillo more than Matsui.

I guess DeRosa seems destined to play RF and a little bit of 3B/1B to give Lee and Ramirez the occasional day off.

If these above moves go through, it would also indicate that if the Cubs get Fukodome or Crawford, they would be playing CF.
