Prior, Guzman activated from 60-day disabled list

By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com

The Cubs also announced they have activated right-handed pitchers Angel Guzman and Mark Prior from the 60-day disabled list. Guzman underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Sept. 6, and will spend most of the winter rehabbing at the team facility in Mesa, Ariz. He could return in June or July.

Prior underwent arthroscopic surgery

Anybody that is up on the rules for the 40 man roster, have any idea why the Cubs would activate these guys so early in the offseason? Possible trade?

There's no DL during the offseason, so everyone on the DL has to be activated.

Is this a guess? If that is the case, why would a writer or the Cubs consider it newsworthy? I was looking at the transactions from last year and there is no mention of Prior or Wood being activated from the 60 day DL in November/December.

But if they were to change that rule, Prior would be a perfect candidate....

EJ is right, players on the 60-day DL have to be activated during the offseason (deadline of November 20th). The only reason I can think that it is newsworthy this season as opposed to last is that Prior might be non-tendered this offseason.

Haha, I love the hotstove season.

Prior's rehab time is like the size of the big catch on the last fishing trip: every time somebody mention's it, it gets longer.

Now Muskat is saying that he may be back in "late 2008". Could this be an instance of Muskat actually having information, or just the general expectations that everyone seems to be throwing around for an often injured pitcher?

She probably just swapped Guzman and Prior's rehab time.

... or just threw a couple of darts at the 2008 calendar on the office wall and jotted down the dates.

I don't know why a July return isn't possible for Guzman. That will have been 10 months, and I believe both Dempster and Williamson returned from TJS in less than a year. Recovery time isn't always as long as it used to be.

question? did guzman really have TJS?

Yes.
