Trading for Miguel Cabrera would be dumb.

The discussions would start at Rich Hill, Soto, Sean Marshall, Matt Murton, Felix Pie and Tyler Colvin. From the Cubs point of view they should stop there, because even that deal would get outbid.

Take Dontrelle's $8m off their hands. Hill and Gallagher slot into their 2008 rotation, include Pie or Colvin. If you have Soriano in left and Cabrera in right, you don't need much production out of CF for the next few years. It's no guarantee to get outbid. Not everybody is anxious to give up huge amounts of talent, and pay the longterm extension Cabrera will want and does deserve.

It can't hurt to get in the discussion.

If you have Miggy in RF, you better keep Pie to cover CF and RF.

If the discussions are including Hill, I would like to think we could get a real shortstop instead of Carl Crawford for him, but that's me.

If the deal is Marmol and Cedeno and prospect for Crawford, fine.

If it's Hill and Cedeno and prospect, I think we can do better than the Crawford upgrade.

Exactly!

Shipping off Marmol right now would be selling high. I'd be all for it, even for a non star like Crawford. Like Meph, I'd MUCH rather improve at SS, but Crawford for Marmol, Cedeno, Prospect would be a good value.

He didn't play that bad of defense in 04 or 05 in the cavernous OF in FLA and although hes plumped up since, hes working with trainers right now to lose weight.

The Cubs have plenty of pitchers in the system, but none of them project to be as good as Rich Hill. When has Hendry ever sold high on a Cubs player or prospect?

Bobby Hill and Matt Bruback for Aramis Ramirez

Hee Seop Choi for Derrek Lee

Both of those were salary dumps.

I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't be able to see that if you're going to give up two very good, pre arb pitchers, you should be getting more back than a player like Crawford. He's good. He'll never be elite. If you're willing to part with assets like Hill and Marmol at the same time, you need to set your sights higher.

Ha. You just said in one paragraph what it took me a novel to say.

Don't worry, it was still a good read.

If Crawford could play CF it would help convince me but as a corner OF, not so much.

Rumor Shot down per Rotoworld

The Rays say there's nothing to the rumors that have Carl Crawford going to the Cubs or being involved in a three-team deal with the Yankees and Brewers.

Talks with the Cubs had reportedly involved Rich Hill and Eric Patterson. The Rays would want a very good young pitcher in a deal for Crawford. Unlike with the Marlins and Miguel Cabrera, there are no financial issues in play here.

and despite a new GM, the beat goes on. I wish they would stop overrated their young players.

Hill + Patterson is still overpaying, from the Cubs' perspective.

I'm beginning to think the crazy trade demands have less to do with who the GM is and more to do with the overall team philosophy.

"Hey, it worked with Kazmir!"

Kaplan was on WGN radio a little while ago and said the talks are on-going. Rays have interest in Epatt, Cedeno, a minor-league outfielder, and Hill.

What minor league OF do the Cubs have besides Colvin (who isn't going anywhere)?

I've been trying to think of what else the Rays have that could interest the Cubs to make Hill and others worthwhile. Can't really think of anything.

Evan Longoria? I wish.

What about Ben Zobrist, JP Howell or Mitch Talbot?

Josh Kroeger or Sam Fuld could be the minor league OF.

Let's get a lefty pitcher back. Jake McGee, plz.

I'd trade Hill and Co. for Crawford if we got McGee/Niemann back

Davis, not Niemann.

yeah, Niemann is at best 4th on their depth charts behind McGee, Price & Davis.

Man, I'd love to see Carl Crawford playing in Chicago next year. I'd do the suggested Crawford for Hill, Cedeno, and Marmol trade in a second. I'm not too excited about getting rid of Marmol, but I don't think he's going to be as good as he was last year so I could deal with it. Crawford is very underrated, I hope JH can acquire him.

I'd still take Niemann, last year looks sorta bad due to an 9.89H/9. Davis obviously over Niemann, though.

Tampa's own Ryan Harvey!

Could be Kyler Burke.

I've seen Hellickson listed over Niemann, but I'd prefer Niemann to Hellickson in return if I'm trading Hill.

Davis and McGee (and obviously Price), aren't realistic return in a trade, but I wonder if they would throw in Niemann to get it done since they do have those three.

Frankly though, if I were the Rays I'd be talking to the Dodgers about Kershaw. I'm also not enamored with Delmon Young's lack of patience over the course of his career and lack of xbh's last year. It was a pretty pathetic showing. And BJ Upton's strike out rate and BABIP are alarming.

Niemann is pretty good and supposedly his stuff was much better this year but he has spent alot of time on the Dl during his short career. So naturally, he'd be a perfect fit along wood, prior, guzman etc.

He had an amazing season at rice on 03 though, curiously most of those guys havent panned out.
