Bruce Levine is reporting on ESPN AM 1000 that Cubs officials have told him that there are 3 or 4 teams showing interest in Jacque Jones.

Bruce did not say which teams, or what kind of players the Cubs could get in return.

That's pretty vague. Are they interested in Jacque if the Cubs pay his entire salary? If they don't have to give anything up to get him? If the Cubs pay most of his salary?

I'm not surprised, given the piss-poor FA selection of CF and his above average defense there. He might be the only guy to be had at a somewhat reasonable price. We all know Torii and Andruw are gonna make wayyy too much money. I say package him with Murton and Marshall/Gallagher and get an impact player.

Piss-poor? Jones, Rowand, Torii Hunter that is one of the better CF FA classes in a while.

I prefer to call it one of the most overrated ever. Both Rowand and Hunter overachieved in 07. My first choice would probably Jones.

Unfortunately, no details given on the report I heard at 1:00 PM. Unlike last offseason though, I sense the Cubs are not in any rush to move him unless they get a really good offer. It sure sounds like Jones is penciled in as the everyday CF to start the season.

I thought Felix was going to get "every chance" to be the opening day CF...

Okay, so maybe we're back to Jacque and Murton platooning in RF.

I thought their game plan was to acquire a left-handed corner outfielder, let Jacque start in CF, let Pie do some more hitting in the minors and then re-visit the CF situation at the trading deadline.

From Sullivan:

Hendry says Piniella will give Felix Pie a chance to become the regular center fielder next spring. Hitting coach Gerald Perry just returned from the Dominican Republic, where Hendry said he worked on shortening Pie's long swing, and Piniella plans a visit this winter.

I think the Cubs are trying to get a lefty corner OF bat and they'll go from there in terms of what to do with Pie-Jones-Murton.

As for the teams that are interested...how about Florida (again), San Diego (home town), Atlanta (want a 1-year stopgap before Jordan Schafer is ready in 2009) and....ummm...Cincinnati (back with Dusty!)?

now that hes shown he can stick in center, hes fine so we have a backup plan if (when) pie fails

That's pretty much it right there. With 1 year on that deal, he's really fairly useful to have around.

I've come to dislike Jacque less and less as time has gone by.

Really? I liked him a lot more when he hit 27 homers.

I think he'll end up between his 2006 and 2007 power numbers if he plays everyday.

It probably helps that with each year, we're a year closer to the end of that deal.

FWIW, I dislike him a lot less than I did when we first signed him too.

Pie could do that too at the league minimum. If we can get someone to take the whole salary, I don't care what we get in return. We should be committing to Pie, and use part of Jacque's money to find a real backup CF, not someone who has been a starter their whole career and now has to sit unhappily on the bench.

I don't know. He's not prohibitively exepnsive, and there's a decent chance that Pie is terrible. As bad as Jones is against LHP, Pie is worse. Jones isn't a bad guy to have as a backup in that instance. Or vice versa.

And for what it's worth, I though he handled his 2 month banishment to the bench in a very good way.

Jacque seems like a very fine gentleman, but he needs to go.

Between Pagan and Fuld, we should be able to cover a complete Pie collapse.

I'm kind of ambivalent about trading him at this point, I'll be honest. He's productive enough to warrant having around for the remainder of his salary (which doesn't seem as bad as it did when he was signed), especially since he's shown he can be a decent CF.

If a team wants to throw a top quality prospect our way for Jacque, then I'd be all for it. Anything below that...ehhhhhh.
