For what it's worth, I was talking to Billy Joe Tolliver last night. He knows A-Rod personally, so I feel this has a little weight. He told me how much A-Rod loves Lou, and how money doesn't really matter to him. He thinks A-Rod wants to be a Cub. Once again - take it for what it's worth (only an opinion).

Did you just name drop Billy Joe Tolliver? My god, that would have ended the name dropping thread if it were on the first page. Nice work.

BTW, what in god's name do you think Billy Joe and AROD talk about when they hang out? Pretty soon, someone's going to tell me that Jon Kitna and Carl Everett are going to church together.

Absolutely - I did. Thanks for catching that.

I heard Billy Joe is a phenomenal golfer.

I love Uptown Girl.

Don't knock on Billy Joe's opinion.

He may be right, you may be crazy.

It just may be a tuna fish you're lookin' for.

the cubs will win the world series in 2012, right before the world ends...a fitting ending

Those ancient Mayan priests predicted the world will end in 2012. But what they forgot to tell everyone was, it's the Cubs winning the World Series that *causes* the world to end

Rob Neyer is very, very dumb.

Actually, he's one of the few ESPN guys with a clue.

Apparently he doesn't have a clue as to the fact the Cubs don't have an owner to authorize spending $260 - $300 million.

As usual, Bruce Miles has an article that actually contains quotes from Hendry to let us know where they may be headed this off-season.

A power hitting lefty right fielder. Hmm. I wonder if any of those may be available via trade...

Look who just became available...

Much like guys like Floyd, Jacque, Burnitz, etc., I'd be shocked if Jenkins isn't on Hendry's radar. :(

I would be shocked if Jenkins isn't a Cub. He's exactly the kind of guy Hendry loves and we certainly can afford him.

Do the Cubs have an option like that in the minors? How do his (Jenkins) numbers compare to Jones and is he better defensively?

IIRC Jenkins has a cannon for an arm, but hes not especially mobile. I think he ranked as a below averaged RF, but an above average LF.

Hes always hit righties pretty well, but hes 33. His 3 year OPS progression vs righties is 922 to 871 to 808. Hes in the decline but can can probably still put up a decent part of the meaty end of a platoon over the next couple years. But he could also exponentially decline. The problem is that he put up a stink about being a platoon player in Milwaukee and will want a starting job and will probably be looking for a lot more money than should be spent on him.

Thanks for the info. If he hates the platoon then he should go to the Reds.

I wouldn't sign Arod, I would think that the 30mil could be better spent on two fifteen million dollar players or three ten million dollar players.

name me the two $15M or three $10M players who will put up the numbers A-Rod has

We already have the 15m players (Soriano, Ramirez and Lee). Now we just need a 30m player and the offense will be in great shape.

If the Cubs sign ARod, expect Ramirez to be gone in my opinion.

Because Ramirez hates ARod? I don't understand why you think he's gone in that scenario. Ramirez gave the Cubs a discount to stay in Chicago, and I doubt he'd just waive his full NTC because ARod was coming.

hmm, I forgot about the ntc. I just don't see the Cubs playing ARod at SS.

I have a riddle for you.

Where do you play the best player in the game?

Wherever he wants to play!

ARod only switched to 3rd to prevent an uproar in Yankees nation by forcing Jeter to move. I'm guessing he'd love to move back to his old position. And I'm also guessing that the team that gets him is the team that lets him play SS again. I could be wrong, but......

You think AROD would have any interest in a 5yr/$100 contract with a $100 million dollar bonus if the Cubs win the WS when he is on the active roster (ie: not injured)?

Not only would he still be getting $100 million over 5 years, which isn't terrible (not to mention all of the endorsements), but he has the chance to make essentially $40 million/year if he can deliver the goods.

So take a pay cut and then give him an incentive that relies greatly on the other 24 players around him? Nah, I don't think that will happen.

and how pissed would the other 24 players be when he gets $100M for his WS share?

Hey, just thinking outside of the box. AROD already has more money than God. Maybe he opted out because he didn't want to be a Yankee. We all know that it's going to be very tough for anyone to beat the Yankees financial offer without being creative. And, it's not like he's getting paid 0, its $20M/year for 5 years with a chance to cash in again in 5 years when he's getting ready to break all of the all time records. Remember, 7 years ago, the guy signed a contract that no one thought he would ever opt out of, now he has a chance to make even more than the $252 million (he already turned down a larger contact with the Yanks)

And...if the other players on the Cubs won the WS, I'm sure they wouldn't be hurting financially at all. Look at all of the fringe 85 Bears and the endorsements that they got. Guys like freaking Emery Moorehead got rich by being on that team. I'm sure Zambrano and Lee would have no problem making millions off of endorsements and I'm sure they all have clauses that get them at least some sort of a payout if they win the WS.

That contract would not be allowed. You are not allowed to put in incentives based on the performance of the team.

Could they do an incentive for WS-at-bats?
