Hendry can't discuss Rodriguez, who remains property of the New York Yankees. But when asked whether he expected a busy off-season, Hendry replied: "We don't think we need to do as much volume as last year, but we do believe it's just as important a winter.
:? :?: A-rod opted out of his contract so how exactly is he still property of the Yanks

I don't think the opt out becomes official until the free agent period begins...in other words, he can opt out of next year's contract and subsequent years, but this year has to be fulfilled and we're not technically at the end of the CBA year.

1. This does not mean the Cubs won't pursue Rodriguez.

2. Of course no one in their right mind should expect the Cubs to have the ability to make a competitive offer for Rodriguez's services given the state of flux in the pending sale of the Cubs.

3. We really would have been better off going after Renteria than Rodriguez.

4. We are probably better off going after Guillen than Rodriguez.

5. We are probably better off signing Abreu than Rodriguez.

The last one may be a stretch.

Your 1 and 2 are mutually inconsistent of course. The answer is 2.

Tigers package is equivalent to the Cubs offering Sean Marshall and Felix Pie. Would you do that for one year plus an option on Edgar Renteria?

4. We are probably better off going after Guillen than Rodriguez.

To play him where, 1B in place of Lee? Because that's where Guillen is headed, to 1B. His knees won't let him play SS anymore.

You can't "sign" Abreu, as the Yankees have already picked up his 2008 option.

there is nothing wrong with number 2. just because sullivan says they cant it doesnt mean they cant (1). the likely outcome is that they cant /wont(2). theyre both possible.

1. That's a better package. Hernandez is what Pie was three or four years ago. Pie's a much safer bet and may have more physical tools.

2. Yes, I would do it. Pies patience sucks. Marshall is a back end of the rotation guy. Completely replaceable.

im sure he can play it as good as (or should i say as bad as) rodriguez. rodriguez has put on a ton of weight and doesnt have the range he used to. he'd be worse than jeter at ss (and jeter is worse than guillen)

As usual, Bruce Miles has an article that actually contains quotes from Hendry to let us know where they may be headed this off-season.

A power hitting lefty right fielder. Hmm. I wonder if any of those may be available via trade...

ARGH:

"We may try to add some infield depth, but Ryan played well enough to be an everyday guy," Hendry said. "It was the first time in his career that he played that many games."

Oh - and hopefully this LH power bat we're looking for can hit LHP, b/c despite what stupid traditional baseball logic would suggest, our RH heavy team can't hit LHP worth a crap. If only our GM knew this.

You think AROD would have any interest in a 5yr/$100 contract with a $100 million dollar bonus if the Cubs win the WS when he is on the active roster (ie: not injured)?

Not only would he still be getting $100 million over 5 years, which isn't terrible (not to mention all of the endorsements), but he has the chance to make essentially $40 million/year if he can deliver the goods.

So take a pay cut and then give him an incentive that relies greatly on the other 24 players around him? Nah, I don't think that will happen.

and how pissed would the other 24 players be when he gets $100M for his WS share?

Sean Gallagher can replace him right now. I would be very surprised if Marshall isn't packaged in a deal for a hitter this offseason.

I think this is all posturing by the Cubs and Hendry. Jimbo always holds his cards close to the vest. There is no doubt in my mind that Lou wants to get Arod in the worst way. There is no way in the world the Cubs would, or even should pony up the cash that Arod wants, but don't fool yourself, I think the Cubs will get permission from the higher-ups to at the very least, offer Arod a fair deal. If Arod is all about the money....then the Cubs are done. However, if Lou could talk to him face to face.......you just never know. If there was only a way to get rid of Boras.......

Hey, just thinking outside of the box. AROD already has more money than God. Maybe he opted out because he didn't want to be a Yankee. We all know that it's going to be very tough for anyone to beat the Yankees financial offer without being creative. And, it's not like he's getting paid 0, its $20M/year for 5 years with a chance to cash in again in 5 years when he's getting ready to break all of the all time records. Remember, 7 years ago, the guy signed a contract that no one thought he would ever opt out of, now he has a chance to make even more than the $252 million (he already turned down a larger contact with the Yanks)

And...if the other players on the Cubs won the WS, I'm sure they wouldn't be hurting financially at all. Look at all of the fringe 85 Bears and the endorsements that they got. Guys like freaking Emery Moorehead got rich by being on that team. I'm sure Zambrano and Lee would have no problem making millions off of endorsements and I'm sure they all have clauses that get them at least some sort of a payout if they win the WS.

i know baseball24387548974231890 would throw a fit, but i really wish the cubs could convince arod that moving to lf or rf would prolong his career and that he should make that move with the cubs.

I could deal with an OF of Sori-Pie-ARod....

I called it. What the hell is wrong with him?

I see nothing wrong with Hendry saying good things about an employee. I'm sure if the right players come up he'll entertain the idea of a move and make it if he thinks it'll make the team better. IMO, Hendry's more concerned about CF and RF and filling those holes.

Or, he could do what most GM's do and say "We're always looking to improve".
