good for him. he was so NOT the reason the Cubs sucked in the late 90's

What, you mean it might have had something to do that they only had three players that deserved a spot on a major league roster?

Oh jesus, Sosa had 40 home runs that year and only a .323 On base percentage. :|

You have to try (there is no almost about it) to not take walks to do that.

Which one of Sandberg, Sosa, Gonzalez and Grace did not belong in the majors?

Seriously, though, they only had those four.

What I remember from that season is Trachsel being the lone Cubs all star rep, and Peggy Kuzinski saying to his face on CLTV that he was obviously only chosen because every team needed a representative. I wanted Trachsel and his 2.14 ERA to slap her across the face on live TV. Pure ignorance. I still hate her to this day.

And not all at the same time for some of his worst seasons.

for real, his isop was only 12 points better than soriano's was this year

yeah, for all the complaining we do about the team right now, I always look back to when I started being a Cubs fan (circa 1992) and feel slightly better. At least we have expectations now. Clearly the only expectations in those days was to find enough players to field a team and maybe sell 15,000 seats per game

Consider that it was 40 HR in a season shortened by about a month and a half after he broke a bone in his hand, and it's even more ridiculous.

If I remember correctly, the bases were loaded when that happened, giving Sosa his 100th RBI of the season and effectively ending his season at the same time.

What more do you expect from a Sox fan?

Seriously...a guy named Leo Gomez got 136 games at 3rd? I don't even remember him...man that team sucked.

You don't remember the great Leo Gomez?!? You're no fan.

leo gomez had an awesome batting stance. i also remember him getting an important hit in late/extra innings on a groundball down the 3rd baseline once

Leo Gomez is one of those guys that stat-wise was a lot better than I thought he was when I was younger.

The distribution of our SP's hitting that year is pretty fun. Foster and Bullinger were good hitters regardless of what position they player, the rest had negative OPS+s

Oh and Frank Castillo had 338 ABs without an extra base hit. That's gotta be some sort of record. I remember him winning some sort of nice car on a bet when he hit a HR in batting practice.

yes! peter gammons talked about this on diamond notes way back when. brian mcrae told frank castillo he'd buy him a benzo if he ever hit a hr during bp. one day, weeks/months later, frank hit two.
