Lord, that was fascinating how you used your incredible math skills to come up with this power rating. One question.. does this formula include pitching? If it did, I would be curious how the Yankees (with a below average pitching staff) would wind up number two, ahead of Cleveland (who has a very good pitching staff).

Why is it ok for people to be condescending to Asmodai/Meph/LoK but not the other way around? If Meph had said this, people would up in arms.

How do you know he wasn't being serious?

Call it a hunch.

Interesting.

Also notice that among the last 3 teams, the 2 teams alive in the ALCS are among the top 3 and the team that won the NL is objectively the best team in the NL.

So, the NL Central was...as bad as everyone thought, then. But hey, the Cubs were the best team in the division. Good for them, competing within the division...

Interesting.

Did you expect anything different?

I didn't expect interleague to represent enough of a sample of games to skew the results to that extent. without those games each league is a zero sum game and the extreme strength at the top of the AL would have resulted in more teams near the bottom.

Without interleague there would be no way these rankings would exist. The markov matrix wouldn't converge.

True, you'd have to have separate rankings for the AL & NL. I still didn't expect there to be that dramatic a shift.

i was asking huber because of his skepticism of the model

No skepticism at all. While I am sure that there is value to what you posted (and that the math is correct) I read that there are conclusions that are based on opinions of the stats presented. Certainly it is an interesting opinion and one that has merit but not any more merit then the scout that has been working in baseball for 30 years. i would treat both opinions the same, very credible. But I would also draw my own conclusions based on the information that both situations offer.

You go ahead and ask a scout to give you some power rankings and I bet this model would be more accurate.

I don't think you're paying attention to what this thread is about. Come to think of it, why did you even mention scouts in the first place? Because of all the math? Jesus.

That's not terribly condescending. Jaxx doesn't appear to be saying LOK is a moron through the sarcasm (assuming that's what it is), he's just indicating that he's unimpressed. If LOK made that statement, it would be condescending because the implication would be that the target isn't smart enough to understand.

At least, that's how I took it.

i'm guessing it also included hitting.

How would Meph's be implying he's not smart enough to understand the math, yet Jaxx's wouldn't imply he's not smart enough to understand baseball?

I don't really want to get in a thing - it's not a big deal. Jaxx's message seems to say he's unimpressed with the original post. I don't see it as any comment about Meph's intelligence implicit in it. The distinction is, when you lay out a long post with lots of math (that many people would find complex), if you followed it up with a post that sarcastically commented on another's ability to understand the model, the obvious implication is that you're saying they aren't smart enough to understand it. But that's not what happened here. Jaxx's post implies "nice formula, but I'm not impressed." Doesn't say anything about Meph's knowledge (about baseball or otherwise).

Again - not a big deal. I just think if you're picking a comment to point out and say "it's not fair - if X said this, he'd get in trouble" you pick one that's worse than this. More venomous comments are posted here by several people on daily basis without any comment from mods. It's just sarcasm, it wasn't particularly mean or spiteful.

His incredible math skills managed to factor in the New York offense.
