Isn't there a confidentiality guideline as far as who was the highest bidder and so on.

I don't see Cuban getting past the 29 other owners, despite it generating more publicity for the game and the improvement likely headed for the Cubs and their facilities.

Isn't the big wild card in this the fact that the Trib is a publically owned company, and therefore the process of buying the asset has to be transparent?

By the time the sale is made Tribune will not be public.

Maybe, maybe not.

Living in Texas and seeing first hand what Cuban has done with the Mavs, I would be pretty ecstatic to see him acquire the Cubs. If you're a 'traditionalist', he's going to rub you the wrong way. He will sit in the right field bleachers, and he'll probably get drunk with the fans. He'll also fight tooth and nail to 'modernize' Wrigley into a more profitable stadium.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Modernize"? I could see him adding Wi-Fi, but thats about it.

\

He'll think of creative ways to add premium seating, similar to what the Red Sox have done with Fenway putting seats on top green monster.

The Tribune has already done that. I can't see where you can stick more seats.

The Trib did it while being as unintrusive as possible to the existing aesthetic of the ballpark. Cuban will go beyond that.

I think there's a lot of opportunity to improve the grandstand seating.

As much of a dog and pony show as your average live NBA experience is, Cuban increased that exponentially when he came to the Mavs. There is literally not a single second of silence at a Mavs game ... its all hip hop music, lasers, wacky bits on the big screen, cheerleaders, smoke machines. Like I said, he's going to rub traditionalists the wrong way, and I'm not just talking about people who discredit on base percentage.

He's also a very intelligent person. He'd know what sells Wrigley, and lasers and big screens aren't it.

The problem isn't selling Wrigley, the problem is that it's tapped out on revenue even though it sells. The purpose of “in-game entertainment" isn't so much to draw and entertain fans, but rather an opportunity to announce and advertise the sponsor (Today's dot race is brought to you by Pappa Johns). I wouldn't be surprised at all if Cuban added a big screen to Wrigley just for the revenue he could generate from it by showing sponsor advertisements.

Yeah, it's one thing to try and sell the ugly whore that is NBA basketball, it's quite another to try and sell Cubs baseball at Wrigley Field.

I think the grandstands were next on the Trib's list anyway, and I have little doubt that Cuban would consider it a challenge to maintain the look & feel of Wrigley while still bringing something new & better.

If you look around Wrigley today vs., say, the 1970's.....that's what the Trib has been doing all along anyway.

He's not that stupid. Plus, he said many times he like Wrigley the way it is. If he wants to generate more revenue just raise ticket prices. If the salary goes up with ticket prices, you'll hear no compliments from anyone.

this may prove to be a pretty important post in the next few months, i hope people take note of it

I hope to get in on the ground floor with this case after passing the bar.

Me 2!

I passed it and I wouldn't want anything to do with this case on any side. Talk about one that will drain the life from you.

Holy Christ...how many lawyers we got on this site? I thought I was one of the only ones killing billable hours!

How would it be stupid? You think people are going to stop going to Wrigley just because he added a jumbotron?

Yeah ... just like they were going to stop going once they added lights and played night games. Fenway added a Jumbotron, hasn't seemed to hurt their ticket sales any.

Where would you put it? Right next to the scoreboard? It would be a eye sore, it would block the rooftops, and the City would never approve it.

Fenway has always been a bastard stepchild to Wrigley as far as the "pristine" older stadium is concerned. They've had ads everywhere, forever. Throwing a jumbotron in there was relatively meaningless. And easy to do. The iconic image of Wrigley has always been the bleachers, from left to right, with the scoreboard front and center. A jumbotron simply would not fit anywhere. Now, throw some notsojumbotrons around the grandstand area is probably a possibility.

If it meant a Cubs WS win in my lifetime, I'd suffer a jumbotron.

I agree, if it means we are going to be a perinnial threat for the WS...I'd suffer Ads on the front and back of the jersies, the name of the latest internet casion mowed into the OF grass, an inflatable Gecko flying above the stadium, and Viagra signs wallpapering the outfield walls instead of ivy.

I love Wrigley with a passion, but I love the Cubs even more. It's about time we win and win often.

While we're on this topic, they really need to replace the TV's by the seats with nice big HDTV plasmas or LCDs. It's ridiculous, they've got TV's from like 1987 showing the game.

Nice call. Replace the ones by the concession stands also.

However, such ads would not mean the Cubs would win, and there's no need for such ads in order for them to win.

All this talk about Modernizing Wrigley and other ways to maximize revenue.

The biggest way he will add revenue is through his relationship with the media. The media revenue should increase for the simple fact that the media outlet and the team aren't owned by the same company. He'll either do more to expand the Cubs own cable network like Steinbrenner has done for the yes network. Or he'll make WGN pay up.

I think most smart owners would do the same, but Cuban would do it well. I want him to own the team so badly. Please Cuban. Buy this team.

There's going to be a lot of disappointed people when Cuban isn't able to buy the Cubs. I include myself in that group.

We're Cubs fans, this is normal.

Cub fans hope- Cubs are going to the series

Reality- They'll look horrid getting swept in the first round.

Cub fan hope- Cuban will buy the team and turn them into perrenial contender.

Reality- Selig's buddy will own them and nothing will change from the last 60 years or so.
