Do the people who say "spent $300 million" also, say, lease a car and say "I just spent $30,000!"

Or a house. "I just spend $450,000!!!"

ive heard people say that when talking about how they just borrowed money to buy a car or whatever.

Maridiotti has been saying $400 million in his Sun Times columns lately -- inflation I guess.

I honestly don't think he could write a single sentence about the Cubs without using the words or phrases: "Cubdom", "Tribsters", "$300/$400 million", "99 years", "Bartman", "goat", "jinx", or "curse".

...It was a nice ride. Sure I'm disappointed we lost, like everyone else I thought we would win this series-- even though the D'backs had been playing a lot better than we had been playing in the last month. I'm not suprised we lost to Arizona but I am suprised we got swept. It was a great year. I can't wait till 2008!

This team wasnt built for a fun ride. It was built to go all the way, not collapse when it counts.

wrong. it was built to "compete within the division". this isn't/wasn't a championship caliber roster

Sometimes the mediocre NLC team scores more runs than the other teams and somehow wins the WS, and sometimes they get swept by the DBacks. Being built to go to the postseason is most of the battle. The rest is a crapshoot. A fascinating and enjoyable one, of course, but for the most part a crapshoot nonetheless.

Getting to the postseason is fun, and about all a team can really control. There's something like an 87% chance that you are going to be let down after that, so it's probably best to "enjoy the ride," actually. It's not the ultimate failure; it's three baseball games. Important ones, but still subject to all the variance that entails.

There's a lot of weird stuff in this thread, so I thought I'd offer an outsider perspective. Kind of a weird version of condolences, but there it is.

Pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter.

While I am disappointed that the Cubs wasted this opportunity, I enjoyed the ride and would gladly enjoy the same type of ride next year (with better postseason results, hopefully).

I honestly thought this team was finished in June, so it was nice to see them fight for the playoffs. 2007 was an exhusting fun ride with a sucky ending. Kinda like a great movie with no payoff...

It beats last year.

If the Cubs being in middle of the pack offensively are mediocre, at best, what are the Diamondbacks with their offense? Sure, the Cubs got beat but, lets not kid ourselves that the Diamondbacks were or are the better team. I'll give some credit to them for beating the Cubs however, they in large part were fortunate that the streaky Cub offense of May decided to show up. Cubs had what, 30+ LOB? and went 1-30+ RISP and either missed, popped-up or dribbled countless hanging breaking balls and badly located fastballs.

Colorado' got a very good chance to expose the fraud that is the Diamondbacks, that trick of opposition whiffing on every mistake and freezing up with RISP is not going to work again.

By the way, does anyone know why the Cubs kept throwing fastballs for strikes to Young? He can't hit a breaking ball to save his life and Cubs kept throwing him the only pitch he can hit - smart.

+1

Well said haltz.

Side note: it's really disturbing how much criticism Piniella is getting for pulling Z after 85 pitches. It's ridiculous 20/20 hindsight logic.

It was a fun ride...in the regular season.

Then the playoffs started.

What?

Once I built a fort out of the cushions from the couch with the idea that I would live in it. Then it collapsed as soon as I got in. Should I be mad? There's absolutely no reason why a couch cushion fort shouldn't last forever.*

*A house of cards is probably a better metaphor for the 2007 Cubs but it seemed unnatural to use the words "Cards".
