Ideally, we'd cut Marquis in favor of Monroe or Ohman... or even Marshall. But it's not a big deal. Good to see Cedeno make the roster... much less excited about Fontenot.

Overall I like this. My only worry is the reserves.

Three's not a whole lot of pop on the bench. 3 of the 6 can at least hit, maybe not with power. The other 3 are all pretty weak hitters though, although Cedeno's looked good in the last week.

Which is why I would have gone with Monroe over Fontenot. Both have been bad, but Monroe at least has the legitimate threat of power.

Our pen has 1 lefty and 7 righties. Besides the Fontenot/Monroe issue, my only problem is MARSUCK OVER MARSHALL? Seriously? Marshall is better and a lefty.

After Marquis (who has 2 years remaining on his contract) harped about being left off the Cardinals playoff roster last year, why is anyone surprised at this?

Right or wrong, there was no way he was being left off the roster.

Marquis is the 8th reliever. They aren't going to use 8 relievers on a normal basis. The main reason he's on the roster is what happens if one of the starters gets hurt? You can't carry just 3 pitchers who are capable of starting, and the Cubs obviously believe right now that Marshall's arm is not capable of throwing the amount of pitches needed to start.

So even if they believe Marshall is the better pitcher overall, the right move is still to take Marquis. He's the better insurance policy.

Actually, BP's preview today predicted this bench, and had this to say about it.

Cubs

OF-R Matt Murton (.281/.352/.438/.271/7.3)

INF-L Mike Fontenot (.278/.336/.402/.255/4.3)

C-R Jason Kendall (.270/.362/.356/.251/3.3)

1B/OF-L Daryle Ward (.327/.436/.527/.327/13.7)

MI-R Ronny Cedeno (.203/.231/.392/.213/-2.8)

CF-L Felix Pie (.215/.271/.333/.219/-5.7)

If the Cubs go with exactly this group—and there’s a chance that Ward isn’t healthy enough to make it or that Pie gets bumped—it might be the best October bench I’ve seen since I started doing these previews. Everyone has their uses—well, okay, maybe not Jason Kendall, but the Cubs have a whole store of ready defensive replacements and pinch-runners. They also have a couple of different types of pinch-hitters, not just lefties and righties, but also guys who can punch the ball into play, or take a walk, or aim for the fences, all of which have somewhat different uses in the situations that come up in close games. The bench is a real asset for the Cubs, and could go a long way toward counteracting the Diamondbacks’ solid bullpen, particularly since the D'backs' strategy is pretty much going to have to involve hoping for a lot of 3-2 ballgames

Problem is, Marshall would be a long reliever which doesn't really help with 2 (out of 3 possible) leftys already in the starting rotation. Can't really argue w/ Marquis over Marshall in that regard. He's been in the heat of a pennant race and has "experience."

strange thing is, after stating Kendall has no use, he goes on to describe two of the roles that Kendall helps fill off the bench and that those abilities are handy against a team like the DBacks.

It was more of a quip than anything else.

marshall is getting stretched out in az in case we make it to the nlcs

where did you get this?

If so, it shows Lou's foresight as well.

Thank god for Lou. Could you imagine this roster with Dusty?

For serious?

That would be really awesome.

Probably a dumb question but can people left off the 25-man roster still travel with the team. You know for emotional support or whatnot. I couldn't imagine what Theriot would do if Fontenot was left off the roster.
