As per Tim Kurkjian:

IF the Mets, Phillies and Rockies win AND the Padres lose today, we will have four teams finish at 89-73.

On Monday, the Mets would play the Phillies in a one-game playoff for the NL East Champion

The Rockies, who won coin-flips, can opt to either play 2 games at home, or skip the first game and play the 2nd game on the road.

If the Rockies choose to play 2 at home, they would play San Diego at home on Tuesday and then, if they win, play the loser of Mets/Phillies on Wednesday.

If the Rockies choose the bye, then the Padres would play the loser of Mets/Phillies, with the winner hosting Colorado on Wednesday.

Any questions?

My apologies to those coming in from out of town for the weekend playoff games, but it likely benefits the Cubs having those games extended to tiebreakers.

I hope each team that does make it, puts their starters on 3 days rest to try and get in. That means Philly would use Kendrick and Hamels, Mets would use Martinez and Perez in those games, of course I doubt Pedro could throw on short rest.

Depending on what happens, however, we may still play Arizona, which would still start our series on Wednesday, right? The only scenario in which we wouldn't play Arizona is if both the Mets and Phillies get into the playoffs

that is, i believe, correct sir...

we play the division winner where the wild card decides to emerge...

Most likely it'll be AZ which is why I didn't include SD or Col. scenarios, AZ will keep it the same and since the Cubs won't play SD or Col either way, any rotation adjustments that impact the Cubs would be NYM or Phil if they both make it.

I'm thinking...

Phils/SD

Cubs/AZ

This is all making my head hurt.

If the Mets/Phils paly tomorrow, the loser then plays SD on Tuesday, correct? If SD wins, that would ensure the Cubs/AZ play.

Would the Cubs/AZ still go ahead and play Wednesday, or would it be pushed back until the entire field is set?

If SD wins today, they have Wild Card no matter what. Cubs don't play Az until whole field is set.

right. the "easiest" way to decide all this is for SD to win today and either NY or PHI (but not both) lose. Then we'd play ARZ on wednesday and there would be no tie-breakers

That would have to be the case, because until the field is set it won't even be known that the Cubs play Arizona in the first place. If the East runner-up wins the wild card then the Cubs would play the East champion.

If SD wins today then nothing else matters for the Cubs. Even if the Mets and Phillies have to play a one game playoff it has no impact on the Cubs schedule. The only way it would is if the loser of that playoff is still in contention for the wild card and a SD win eliminates that possibility.

Theoretically if SD, Mets and Phillies all lose and the Rockies win then the Mets and Phillies would have a 1 game playoff for the East title and the Rockies and Padres for the wild card. In that case the Cubs would be locked in to the AZ matchup no matter what the outcome of the one game playoffs.

That's true. I was thinking of the Phillies and Mets both winning, in which case the loser of the divisional tie-breaker would also be in the wild card mix.

trying to summarize as this topic relates to the Cubs, since that is what it has become about:

1. SD wins, Cubs play in AZ

2. SD loses, Rockies win, one or both NY/Philly lose, Cubs play in AZ

3. SD loses, Rockies lose, both NY/Philly win, loser of NY/Philly plays SD.

a. loser of NY/Philly wins, Cubs play there,

b. if SD wins, Cubs play in AZ

4. SD loses, the other three win, then there is the above playoff.

a. Rockies win, Cubs play in AZ

b. SD wins, Cubs play in AZ

c. loser of NY/Philly wins, cubs play there.

I'm pulling for this to happen. A 4 way tie would be sweet to see. Stupid Mets are not following trend though, down 4-0 in the first inning playing some bad defense.

How has AZ already clinched the division if they're only a game ahead of SD?

If Arizona and SD tie, they will have won both the division and the WC. Since they would both be in the playoffs, the tiebreaker becomes head to head record which Arizona owns.

So basically, for those of us who want the games to remain as tentatively scheduled (Weds Thurs on the road, Saturday Sunday at home), we should just hope for a Padres win?

Thanks. With all these numbers flying around something wasn't connecting in my brain.

Mets down 7-0 and just got out of the top half of the 1st inning. Glavine already yanked after only getting 1 out and giving up 7 runs. It's gonna take a lot for them to win today.

Mets getting killed right now so it's looking like, at the most, there could only be two one game playoffs between the Mets and Phillies (for the NL East) and for the NL WC (Rockies and Padres) which would both take place on Monday. But with the Mets losing they won't be able to tie for the WC which is nice because the Cubs' first round series wouldn't get pushed back.

So, let me see if I understand this. If the Mets pull off a huge comeback and the Phillies and Rockies win and SD loses, then there's a 4-team playoff. And if either the Mets or Phillies got the WC, then the Cubs would play the division winner? I would think that would be the best possible scenario because of the extra games they'd have to play.

the Mets are certainly making a mockery of all this. Tim Kurkjian is crying somewhere

Personally, I would rather see whoever the Cubs play be on a couple days rest as well. Odds are that it will be AZ, and my priorities are the same as mizzou's - I just want the games to happen on their scheduled days.

Or a Phillies loss. Or a Mets loss. Any of those three results in an Arizona v. Chicago series
