I expect to see plenty of this tonight.

EDIT - This was the exact moment I was 'sold' on Aramis Ramirez, btw.

The most excited I've ever been as a Cubs fan. I'm definitely down for some recreation on their part.

That was the one time in my life I really let my guard down with them. I thought for sure after that game we were going to the World Series.

As of right now, Zambrano and Lilly are scheduled to pitch the last two regular season games of the year. If the Cubs somehow clinch before then, do you think they will sit both Z and Lilly to give them some extra rest?

Yes. If the Cubs clinch, both Z and Lilly will sit. If they somehow clinch before Friday (which I see as possible but not likely) then my guess is that they will likely still give Rich Hill his start so he isn't waiting too long before his start in the playoffs.

Personally, I'd probably pitch Z on Friday even if the Cubs clinch and give Hill and Lilly time off. I want Z on as close to regular rest as possible so he doesn't come out too strong, and Hill has thrown a lot of innings for what he's used to this year so he could use the break.

I think that if they clinch on Friday, Zambrano would still pitch on Saturday. Lilly will be your game 1 starter (Wednesday the 3rd) and then Zambrano with regular rest for game 2 (Thursday the 4th). Although another bad Zambrano start would raise some question marks about the rotation going into the postseason. I would still roll the dice, though. Zambrano on 8 days of rest=not good.

This is what I would do as well.

I thought for sure in 1984 we were going to the World Series. That scared me as a Cubs fan forever. I knew in 2003 after game 5 we were in trouble. We looked flat in that game. After the game I went on espn.com message board and told everyone that we are going to blow this. I just felt it. Of course everyone laughed at me...

I wasn't old enough to remember 84. 89 and 98 we weren't very good. '03 I was happy with the first round win, what with our young pitching. But, once we got up 3-1 with Z, Prior, and Wood going. Sigh.

My Dad bought champagne and had it on ice after game 2. We watched in horror for 3 consecutive games as our best players just all of a sudden couldn't do anything right.

....watched in horror as the evil Garvey ripped our hearts out. I was too young, it was only several years later I discovered the league took away our rightful home field advantage. 1984 hurt me on a very deep level.

But that was to go to the World Series. I've since learned that this club can make the playoffs. We've done it several times. The big hump is winning that 4th game in the NLCS. We aren't there yet.

Consider yourself lucky because that was a ridiculous choke job.

It was, but it was partially league-inspired. Yes we should have been able to win one, but I gotta believe that team wins game 5 in front of the Wrigley crowd. The SD crowd played a *huge* role in helping them over the top.

Then they got into a series against a better ballclub where they didn't have home field and pretty much just got slaughtered.

I'll never forget the headlines the next day reading "EVEN STEVEN" after game 4. Damn you Garvey!

And I'll never forget the headline after game 5 in the Tribune. "Wait 'till next year" and had a picture of a Cub Bear shedding a tear. Man that was a rough off season for a kid.

Yeah I saw them talk about it on the HBO cub special. It seemed to hurt more to the older cub fans. it must be bad, because I still can't watch the highlights of '03 without getting angry.

After 1984 I was fully prepared for 2003. It eased the blow a little. Very little.

I was on ESPN at the same time and was telling people to quit projecting possible World Series rotation matchups, as we hadn't won anything yet.

Too bad you couldn't let Dusty know that, before he held Z out of game 7 to start the first game of the world series.

1984. Leon Durham. I forgive, but I will never forget.

I was a sophomore in highschool. I still have the Chicago Tribune from the day the Cubs clinched the NL East.

I think Wood was the proper call in game 7.

Clement or Z should have been used in relief in Game 7. Clement in particular would have been the ideal choice.

Didn't Clement say he wasn't comfortable with relieving?

I'll bet he was less comfortable watching Wood, Farnsworth and Veres cough up a 5-3 lead.

Not just uncomfortable; but his asthma would just kill him on the mound if he didn't get enough time to warm up. I think he needed something like 45 minutes before the game before he could pitch without being significantly affected by his asthma.

Oh he was, but once he struggled when they went with Beckett we should have went with Z.
