Clement or Z should have been used in relief in Game 7. Clement in particular would have been the ideal choice.

Didn't Clement say he wasn't comfortable with relieving?

Not just uncomfortable; but his asthma would just kill him on the mound if he didn't get enough time to warm up. I think he needed something like 45 minutes before the game before he could pitch without being significantly affected by his asthma.

So, they should ahve setup a stationary bike or something in the clubhouse. Have him get warmed up at the start of the game. It was the playoffs there should be no excuses.

Z was running on fumes, from what I remember. He wasn't nearly as sharp as he was during the season. But he should have been an obvious candidate in Game 7. Best way to answer these types of questions is to just win the damn thing this year.

I expect to see plenty of this tonight.

EDIT - This was the exact moment I was 'sold' on Aramis Ramirez, btw.

The most excited I've ever been as a Cubs fan. I'm definitely down for some recreation on their part.

That was the one time in my life I really let my guard down with them. I thought for sure after that game we were going to the World Series.

I thought for sure in 1984 we were going to the World Series. That scared me as a Cubs fan forever. I knew in 2003 after game 5 we were in trouble. We looked flat in that game. After the game I went on espn.com message board and told everyone that we are going to blow this. I just felt it. Of course everyone laughed at me...

I was on ESPN at the same time and was telling people to quit projecting possible World Series rotation matchups, as we hadn't won anything yet.

Too bad you couldn't let Dusty know that, before he held Z out of game 7 to start the first game of the world series.

I think Wood was the proper call in game 7.

Oh he was, but once he struggled when they went with Beckett we should have went with Z.

I honestly think that Beckett pitched every single game. He killed us.

Hell no! He was too pumped up! He pitched 98 on the gun consistently.

I remember after game 4 hearing people on ESPN discussing whether they wanted the Cubs to lose game 5 so that they could win at home. Unbelievable in retrospect.

I remember that also. All that talk just pissed off the Marlins.

The Homefield advantage thing in '84 is a myth. It was rotating home field advantage back then, and it was the West's turn to have it.

And Zambrano was pretty unremarkable in the '03 postseason, not to mention that he'd be pitching on 2 days rest.

If you were gonna mess with the pitching you pull Prior after 5 in Game 2, bring him back in Game 5 with Z in relief. Pitch Clement in a potential game 7.

I remember in Game 6 hearing (Belushi wasn't it?) Say "Lets go Champs" during the 7th inning stretch...I cursed him so...saying "we're not champs yet"....I'll never forget thinking that, and what happened after.

Man, this thread is like a support group meeting. I'm just picturing you all sitting in a circle, drunk, depressed, and on the verge of tears....And I can't help thinking how bad it will be if we blow this lead....I'm getting depressed and nothing bad has happened.

Oh...I think we're being appropriately realistic...I think, no, I believe, the Cubs will win, this feels different...I like Lou, and I like this team....I think the talk is just a reminder that we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves...we've got work left to do and I think they'll do it.

Do we? I had no clue....I turned avatars off a long time ago...makes it much easier to have this page up at work w/o being super obvious that its not work content.

In 2012, the next time the Cubs are good we'll all be in a game thread talking about the game thread in 2007 when we were talking about the game thread in 2003 or the collapse in 1984. :D

Seriously, Different year, different team, different manager, different outcome.

Go Cubs!
