I just looked at a couple sites because I was curious. It says Fielder is only signed for this year, so is Corey Hart.

....and Braun only has a deal for this year?

That's a big chunk of the Crew's hitting lineup. Is this true? If so, don't they need to open up the wallet for next year? Could we possibly pick up a Corey Hart in F.A. - ? I'd take him.

FYI: here are the sites:

I'm just bringing it up because I've heard almost NO talk of Brewer players who they need to re-sign, so I assumed they're good for a couple years on some of these guys. I was pretty suprised to see this -- am I just reading it wrong or is the info incorrect?

We could use some hitting and Hart's going to be out there? Heck, sign him. Crew can't protect everyone, are they going to bring back a Hart for decent dollars if they need to shell out huge megabucks for Fielder? Hmmm....

All three players are under Brewer team control for a while. Braun was just called up mid season, so Brewers control his rights for the next 6 years. Fielder and Hart, I'm guessing are under control each for at least the next 4+ years. None of those players are going anywhere.

So the info's not incorrect, it just doesn't include that the Crew still controls these guys for years. Thx, I felt like something was missing from the picture -- I'm not an expert on how these contract things work.

I'm not exactly sure how far any of those players are from arbitration, but until then, the basic gist is that the team can pay them whatever they want to pay them year-to-year. Of course, if the team pays the minimum for a player that is All-Star caliber, they aren't likely to keep that player any longer than is league-required.

The info is correct. They have the choice to non-tender the players at the end of every year. Years 3-6 will be arbitration and then they'll hit free agency. They are under control and not contract. Cot's also lists service time which is nice.

murton, marmol, rich hill, pie, marshall, theriot and soto aren't signed for next year, what are the cubs thinking???

Alright. O.K. hahah, very funny.

2008 is the last year the Brewers get Fielder cheap. 2009 its going to be $10M+.

10M's probably a little high for first year arb. I was thinking more 8.5M or so but that's really picking nits. I think the Brewers would be wise to lock him up through arb right now. Maybe pay him some more next year, so as to not have all their players making huge salary jumps at the same time.

It's generally standard practice that players are under one-year contracts during their early years until they are close to eligible for free agency. The extension Z recently signed is his first multi-year contract.

Soul's player contract lesson #1 for Monday September 24th. I told you I don't follow the ins & outs of how MLB contracts are done. I know much more about football.

I'm the guy who didn't know you can shuttle a player up & down from the minors and it uses up one slot. I'll freely admit to being a lightweight when it comes to these things.

That is becoming more of the norm for players of his caliber.

Ryan Howard is arby elgible after this year. That should give Fielder/Brewers a pretty good indication of whats out there. Pujols signed a 7 year $100M contract in his first year of arbitration. $15M per year. These 2 guys arent in his league but its pretty close. The deal Pujols signed a couple years ago looks great for the cards

I got a silly question that might belong in this thread. So we have a bunch of players making the league minimum of 400k, all youngsters of course. If they get sent down to AAA during the year, do they go back to making 1000/month or whatever? For example, what did Murton make when he got stuck in Iowa early this year? Do we have to give guys like Fuld and Hart 400k when they're called up?

anyone on the 40 man roster has a major league contract and vice versa (that's why Samardzija is on the 40 man) even if they're playing in Iowa - or Daytona for that matter.

I think it is a little more complex than "6 years from when they are first pulled up."

My understanding is that teams have x number of years from when they first sign a player to put him on their major league roster or risk losing him in the Rule IV draft. Then, after putting them on the 40 man roster they can only be there for y years (or something like that--which is why it was important to Prior and Samardzia to get "major league contracts"--then they are on the 40 man roster) but it is 6 years of major league service on the 24 man active roster (so a player getting shuttled up and down only gets credit for the time they are actually on the 24 man roster (which is why many teams leave players off their 24-man roster until May or June).

I may be misunderstanding it, though.
