Considering the fact that the Cubs have lived with Cliff Floyds statuesque defense in RF for his offense, I'm sure they could live with Bonds' defense in LF.

The Cubs, and the rest of the NL, will be more worried about Bonds' health to take a chance on him. Though if he did sign with a NL team I hope it would be the Dodgers.

We'd be stupid to not even explore the option. Depending on what he's willing to sign for, he could be an absolutely fantastic addition.

It would essentially require playing Pie everyday Bonds is in the lineup, just to cover the spare ground... but that's not really a bad thing either.

I'm not in favor of signing Bonds, but this is an interesting statistic for all of the Dunn, Burrell, and Bonds lovers out there:

John Dewan, author of "The Fielding Bible," created a plus/minus system that determines how many plays a fielder makes that are above or below those of an average player at his position. Dewan and the staff at Baseball Info Solutions watch tapes of every major league game and track every play.

Bonds this season is minus-8, which is ugly. But even at 43, with his creaky knees and occasional lack of hustle, he scores higher than left-field counterparts such as Boston's Manny Ramirez (minus-35), Cincinnati's Adam Dunn (minus-29), Florida's Josh Willingham (minus-28) and Philadelphia's Pat Burrell (minus-25).

I don't see Bonds getting 15m. He's a part time player now and only continuing to play to pad his individual achievements.

yes, he is so selfish. man, i can't believe he wants to achieve more milestones as a player. who on earth would want to play baseball at age 44 for 10 million a year? i know i wouldn't.

Seems as though you read my post wrong.

Teams weren't interested in paying that kind of money for him last year, so he stayed in San Fran. San Fran gave him the money because they had plenty to spend. Now that they are out of the picture, who's going to give him 15m to be a part time player?

Move Soriano to RF. Pie/Jones in CF. Murton spells Bonds on his multiple off days.

That's exactly what should happen if we get Bonds. It won't happen, but putting Bonds at 1B will be as successful as putting Frank Thomas at 1B.

Umm...

Double ummm

There were times where Thomas's double play throws went into LF. I can't imagine Bonds, with the shape he's in, playing 1B. Keep Lee where he belongs.

When did anyone say anything about Bonds playing 1B?

I'd put him at pitcher. This way he can prove he's better than Ruth once and for all.

I'd be floored if Barry doesn't go be a DH next year. His fielding has gone down big time. Why would he even want to run around on those knees in the field when he doesn't have to?

He has DH written all over him. But then again, I don't understand many of the things Bonds does.

I think it's a move that ought to be considered. Even if Bonds only starts 100 games, he'd be valuable. Consider him in a platoon with perhaps Murton. Now compare Murton's current platoon partner -- Cliff Floyd -- to Bonds. Yeah, that should really end the discussion. I'll take Bonds over Floyd.

Obviously, Barry's cost is a concern. There are other possibilities out there for OF, but what kind of contract will they receive, too? With Bonds, you know he's only going to play for one more season -- two more at most.

I think if the Cubs target him, he very well might be interested. After all, the Cubs are a decent, low-level playoff contention-type team, and he'd be a significant upgrade.

And since Bonds is such a swell guy I'm sure he'll sign for 1 million a year too! I'd rather spend the cash on ARod because Bonds isn't going to do this cheap imo.

Come on now, stop with the crazy talk. Bonds... teehee. Seriously, though, let's be realistic about ARod. There's almost no way that the Cubs can afford him. It's not going to happen unless something really odd happens. I'd love if it did, but I wouldn't bank on it.

Obviously, Bonds is still valuable as hitter. Does anyone want to debate that? LF and 1B are the easiest positions to play, so he will be playing one of the two if he signs with a National League team

Yeah and he's horrible in LF now. Considering how stiff and immobile he is now, plus the fact that he hasn't played 1st, he would be a disaster there also.

Anything to back up that he's actually "horrible" out there?

My eyes. He moves worse than Cliff Floyd. His range is awful.

I guess I might be one of the few who would rather have Alfonso than Bonds. Offensively he is going to outproduce Soriano statistically. Very roughly project Bonds to get a 1.025 OPS and Soriano around an .900 OPS.

Soriano is more likely to play 9 innings for 155 games. If Bonds stays healthy (which isn't a great bet) he probably maxes out at 490 plate appearances. If Soriano stays healthy he's going to get 700 PA's.

Soriano gives you a ton more speed on the bases, much better defense and about equal power at this point in their careers. Obviously Bonds' OBP abilities are so ridiculous that they trump offensively.

But overall considering how many fewer PA's he would get, the liabilities elsewhere and the greatly increased risk, I would take Alfonso. Even if he stays healthy and produces, you're going to have to replace him in a year or two and risk having no proven producers in your outfield.

I agree but it's fun to dream. Let's have a Mariner reunion and get Junior too.

For most GM's, even if they wanted to sign Bonds, their club presidents would forbid the signing. There's too much to lose from a marketing standpoint for any team outside the Bay Area for a guy like Bonds for the club president to let it go through, no matter how much he may help on the field.

As long as we're thinking outside of the box here.

Johan Santana (rumor is he wants out of Minnesota)

Pie + Marshall + Gallagher (or any three players they want not named Lee, Z, or Aramis)

Sign one of the many competent FA CFers who will be flooding the market, Andruw Jones maybe?

Don't waste valuable resources on Tejada. If A-Rod becomes available make a big play for him (not likely).

Soriano

Murton

Lee

Aramis

A. Jones

DeRossa

Soto

Theriot

Z, Hill, Lilly, Santana, ?

That would be a tough team to beat in a seven game series.

I'll give them Lee if that's what it takes
