What I'm really curious about; how many games were the Cubs up by with 8 games left in 2004?

 

Cubs were up 0.5 games on the Giants and 2.5 games on the Astros with 8 games to play (and only 7 to play for the Astros). The Cubs were up 3 in the loss column at that point.

 

That's really absurd. I mean, the Giants coming back would've seemed reasonable, but the Astros had no business reentering the race.

The Giants went 4-3 in their final 7 games and the only way the Astros could win the division outright was to win their final seven. Which they did.

I remember getting home during a game last year in the 7th inning and checked the game thread to see what had been going on and there hadn't been a post since the 4th inning.
