We were talking about this in the game thread today.

If the cubs make the playoffs; what catchers do we carry? My guess is Kendall and Soto. Some people are convinced it will be Kendall and Blanco.

So, what are your thoughts? and why?

With Soto getting a chance to play more than once every other week lately, I have to imagine its him. Unless of course he completely tanks over the next two weeks.

When was the last time Blanco played? I don't think he's healthy enough to go right now.

Soto is firmly entrenched as the backup, I think he's the clear choice for backup.

Blanco started on September 3rd against the Dodgers, and that was the last time he has seen the field. Since then, Soto's gotten 4 starts and 19 AB's to Blanco's 0.

I definitely agree that Soto is the backup unless something major happens.

Probably a stupid question but how many pitchers are usually on a playoff roster? I am guessing 11. I was trying to think of a way to carry both Soto and Blanco, but couldnt. What I do find interesting is that I have an idea on who the Cubs should have on their playoff roster, but I am not sure that is what the Cubs will do.

Normally 11. Starting this season, if there is an injury that would have a player go on the 15-day DL normally, a team can add a new player to the playoff roster before the next game (not the next series).

If thats the case than I would go with a bench of Soto, Ward, Murton, Monroe, Pie and either Fontenot or Cedeno. If a Infield emergency came up then Soriano would have to play 2nd in a pinch.

Blanco hasn't played in two weeks, I think it's clear that Soto will be on the roster.

As an aside, it's pretty cool that we're speculating about playoff rosters. It's been a few years since we've been able to do that!

Sad thing is this wouldn't even be a debate if Koyie Hill had been DFA'd when he should've been. Soto might've had 100 more PA and the Cubs might be a game or two better in the win column.

after the red hot starts of Pie, Pagan, and Fontenot, Im not going to get too attached to Soto, but he definitely deserves a PO spot over Blanco.

The difference is Soto has been red hot all year, not just recently. As for pie, i'm still convinced he'd be just fine if he was ever given consistant AB's.

Ronny Cedeno had some pretty impressive AAA stats as well. Hopefully Soto can be our Ryan Braun/Hunter Pence. Were well over due for a big time offensive prospect to make good.

I think people are still having a hard time adjusting to the fact that Piniella doesn't really care about who is a proven veteran and who isn't. If this was Dusty Baker's team, yes, it'd be Blanco and Blanco would be playing as often as Soto is right now. But, it's Soto who's getting the AB's and he will be on the playoff roster if the Cubs get the chance to fill one out. In fact, the case can be made that Soto should be starting right now given that Kendall is 8-50 in September and Soto is 11-19.

I think Soto's a marked upgrade over Kendall, all in all. I'll admit that Kendall's done better than I anticipated, but Soto's better defensively, likely to be better (at this point) offensively over the course of a season, and gets paid the major league minimum.

That, hopefully, represents a modest improvement at C while freeing up resources to sign an SS or RF this offseason. The more I think about it, the more likely it seems to me that the Cubs recognize the OF deficiency and will look hard at how they can improve it. (Don't get me started about Murton -- he would be a modest upgrade over Floyd.)

"I like experience this time of the year, although Soto has done a nice job. We'll see," Piniella said.

Not saying this means Soto wont be on a playoff roster if we make it, but its clear today was just an offday for Kendall and nothing more.

Yup, that was Piniella's quote before the game. The only thing I can find after the game is this little comment by Muskat:

Soto had a career-high four hits and may have won more playing time

I think Piniella is coming around on Soto, I just wish he'd go a little faster on it. One thing that I am happy about is that Piniella seems to really like Soto, which spells good things for his PT in 2008. I doubt he'll ever get to do more than split time in 2007, but I do hope it gets to that point.

With Kendall's recent cold streak, Lou may be realizing it's a good idea to give him more days off to rest before the playoffs. Thus giving Soto more ABs in preparation for the playoffs.

It also could mean substantial playing time for Soto next year, if for no other reason than to keep Kendall fresh for the stretch run.

Even Baker would be coming around to Soto at this point. Kendal has been an ok offensive catcher and an abysmal defensive catcher with the Cubs. He started out hot and is getting worse at the plate. Soto has been better than him hitting and catching. It's not close.
