no.

I believe that the significance of it now being Sept. 1st is that no one can be called up (for the first time?) and placed on the playoff roster

Playoff Rosters: Playoff rosters must be set at 25, not including disabled players, on August 31. For each player on the 60-day DL, teams may add players to the eligible list during the playoffs at the same position, provided that they were in the orginization on August 31. This is why some teams will bring up injured minor-league players and put them on the 60-day DL. Teams must choose 25 players from their playoff eligible list before each round of the playoffs.

i got this from the "baseball glossary"...

so...whoever is on our 25 man now is who our playoff roster is barring injuries?

what makes up our "playoff eligible list"

is that the 40 man?

Posted
The tentative eligible list includes all players on the 25-man roster or major league DL as of Aug. 31. Teams can select any 25 players from the eligible list, and it doesn't have to be the same 25 players for each round of the postseason. In addition to that, players not on the eligible list but who are in the organization as of Aug. 31 can replace players on the 60-day DL (pitcher for pitcher, position player for position player). Since the Cubs have Prior, Novoa, and Guzman on the 60-day, so they could add up to three pitchers not currently on the 25-man or DL. I believe Trachsel would qualify under this provision, as would pitchers currently in the minor league system (Gallagher, etc.).

I think Tracshel is auto eligible because the deal was made before the deadline and because there was room on the 40 man. Even though he may not wear a uniform for the first time until sometime tomorrow, I believe he is eligible.

Pretty much any pitcher can be on it. I'm not positive how Pagan's situation affects the position player aspect.

What is Pagan's deal? Is he on the DL? I saw him in uniform after one of the Brewer games.

yeah, he is available...hendry said it during the game yesterday...but as i was making this list i put him in there...however, wouldn't they have to take someone off of the 25 man to put him on there?

that means i am missing someone and i don't know who... :?:

Well there's no 25 man roster anymore, but Jones was in Trachsel's spot.

As I said though, due to Novoa, Gooz, and Prior being on the 60 day DL, any pitcher currently in the Cubs organization is "eligible" for the postseason. Trachsel(if he was chosen for a possible playoff game) would take the spot of one of these 60 day DLers.

Now, I'm not sure but I believe there's been conflicting reports as to whether Pagan is on the 60 day DL. If he is, and doesn't come back this year, then any position player in the organization can make the roster.

I think you are missing Jacque.

He isn't on the 60-day according to cubs.com. If he was there would have been no need to DFA Coats to make room on the 40-man for Monroe (unless he was transferred after that and it just hadn't been announced yet).

Discussing a possible playoff roster for this awful team is high comedy.
Not when this "awful" (to use your overly hyperbolic term) is in first place. Playoff roster is a VERY relevant topic.

JeffH, you're ok in my book, no matter what these folks say about you. This team is only what, four games over .500? We need a big September before I'm a believer.

Edit: Ok, so the Cardinals won last year with a very mediocre team, but they had David Eckstein. Our only hope is that Theriot is Ecksteiny enough to cause the opposing CF to make a critical error that carries us to a WS victory.

Yeah and if somebody mentioned something about who should be our DH then you'd have the slightest bit of a point. We're leading the division right now, why is it stupid to talk about a potential playoff roster?

Oh believe me I'm pulling hard for us when/if we make the playoffs, I just think JeffH has a legitimate concern.

In 2003 I think we had a very similar record on September 1, but we had a really good month that we carried into the playoffs. I'm just hoping for more of the same this year with better results.

In case you hadn't noticed, the Cubs are in first place going into the last month of the season, being trailed by one team that is at least just as flawed and another that is far more flawed.

When it comes to playoff chances, how good the Cubs are relative to the teams in their own division is the only thing that matters.

Whether you find it amusing or not, the odds are in favor of the Cubs making the postseason, thus necessitating a postseason roster, which it seems to me is worthy of at least some discussion.

I'm glad you are amused, though.

I know, what a jerk. The guy asked if he was correct, and he wasn't, so he was told that he was, in fact, incorrect.

Why stop at banning, let's kill him.
