At 2pm it is expected to be announced that Phil Garner and Tim Purpura are to be released by the Houston Astros. Not a sure thing yet, but that is the word on the streets.

EDIT:

Cecil Cooper to take over for now.

Well that sucks. They were doing a great job of running that team into the ground.
I know. They went from a pretty good GM to a terrible one. Hopefully he won't land in Chicago once Hendry gets canned at the end of the season.

Astros are only 9 games out. Think they are trying to spark the team for a late season run? Otherwise, why the hell wouldn't he just ride out the season? Why the hell didn't the Cubs do this with Dusty?

it worked for them last time

Yeah it was nice having two Royals teams in our division.

Tough break for Garner. He seemed like a good fit the past couple of years, but he just hasn't had a good team this year.

I'm sure he'll land with another team next year looking a gritty old-timer.

With the Reds jumping back to 6 back, I'm sure the Astros would be happy to join the party.

Maybe they'll unload Carlos Lee this offseason (if he'd be willing to waive his NTC).

Or maybe Oswalt. I'd be glad to have both of those guys out of the division.

Frankly, that team is in such a hole right now, it'll take at least a few years to bring them back to respectability.

Consecutive NLCS appearances? 1.5 games away from the playoffs last year? That hardly seems like the type of results expected for people "running a team into the ground."

BTW, that quote from the article:

Garner was the 14th manager in franchise history and had a 277-252 record. He took over at the All-Star break in 2004 and turned around a struggling club by going 48-26 in the second half and winning the National League wild card on the final day of the season.

It still makes me want to cry.

Is it possible that all five non-Cub teams in the Central could be looking for managers in the off-season?

Cardinals -- now that they are back in contention, are all the vague, distant rumblings about LaRussa and Jocketty leaving suddenly moot?

Brewers -- if they finish below .500, I'm convinced that Ned Yost is gone.

Reds -- they've played much better under Pete Mackanin, but they might be somewhat reluctant to commit to him after going through the same thing with Jerry Narron.

Pirates -- Jim Tracy would be an obvious scapegoat, in spite of -- or, rather, because of -- the ineptitude of Dave Littlefield. I mean, what GM worth his salt goes out trading for Cesar Izturis? ...besides Jim Hendry??

Astros -- see above

But I think that change was midseason

The Matt Morris trade is one of the most inexplicable trades in recent history. If Littlefield doesn't get fired in the offseason for that trade alone, he might very well be GM for life out there.

There is precedence. For some strange reason, Matt Millen has yet to be fired by the Lions. He's far worse than Littlefield could ever hope to be.

I call shenanigans. Cecil will order his pitchers to throw meatballs to his son to help his MVP campaign.

EDIT: Crap, wrong Cecil.

the reason is that william clay ford can't fire anybody. He also let wayne fontes coach the lions for 9 years, and everyone thought he was going to be fired in at least 7 of those years.

This is a good point.

Fontes was found with cocaine in his car when he was an assit. coach for the Lions, and Ford still didn't fire him.

It's a true story.
