What Bullcrap. How come Derrek Lee had to serve 5 games and Lou had to serve 4 and Prince gets his reduced to 2?

San Francisco - Just talked to Scott Boras, the agent for Prince Fielder, and he said he made an offer to MLB to reduce Fielder's suspension from three games to two and a deal was struck.

"We threw a proposal out there and they bit," said Boras, reached via telephone from Detroit, where he was attending the official introduction of the Tigers' No. 1 draft pick, high school pitcher Rick Porcello.

Boras said umpire Wally Bell's report said Fielder gave him a "slight bump" during their heated argument Aug. 12 in Houston. Boras said bumping an umpire usually merit's a three-game suspension but he tried to convince MLB that it was very slight, unintentional and that Fielder is a good kid who doesn't look for trouble.

"I think it was clearly a two-day thing," said Boras. "We told them we won't go through a hearing if they would take a day off.

"Prince is not a problem kid. He's pretty good about things. I think that helped."

Boras, who can be tough to deal with on many issues, admitted MLB probably thought it better to reduce the suspension than go through an argumentative process with him.

Not a problem kid??? He doesn't even have a good relationship with his own father.

I don't think Lou even appealed and didn't Derrek Lee drop his?

EDIT: Are you really comparing a guy who made accidental contact with an up (Prince) to a guy who charged the mound and caused benches to clear (Lee)?

And what does Prince not having a good relationship with his father have to do with being a problem kid?

Yeah, funny how MLB took over a month to hear Derrek's appeal forcing Derrek to drop it and Prince's appeal is heard in one week.

It's a conspiracy against the Cubs!!!

Yes, but technically Fielder dropped his suspension as well.

I'm sure the Cubs would have liked to have called MLB and said "We'll drop our appeal if you lower the suspension number."

This is absolutely ridiculous. Now Fielder gets his suspension reduced, but at the same time he got to pick the time and the place to serve his suspension. At least if he had to go to an appeal his suspension might have been at an inconvenient time-Fielder just got to have it both ways.

I could be wrong about this, but I believe Lou was never able to appeal his suspension because coaches do not have a union. Is that right?

Maybe the MLB scheduled the hearing for the off day on Monday, and Prince, realizing that the suspension would fall on the Cubs series, scrambled and tried to get something done so he could play next week.

That wasn't my point.

Remember Lou got a 4 game suspension for BUMPING THE UMPIRE and none of us even saw it.

Prince BUMPS THE UMPIRE and gets a 3 game suspension and now gets it reduced to 2.

That is absurd

Didn't he get a 4 game suspension for kicking dirt on the umpire's shoes in addition to bumping him?

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-cubs-piniellasuspended&prov=ap&type=lgns

The commissioner's office originally planned to suspend Piniella for five games. The penalty was reduced by one game after Piniella spoke with John McHale Jr., MLB's executive vice president for administration.

Piniella said he was suspended for making contact with umpire Mark Wegner -- which the Cubs first-year manager denied -- and for "exciting the crowd, which is not hard to do in Chicago."

Oh noes!!! Dirt on an umpire's shoes??? Let's double the suspension right there!

Does he really get to pick when he serves it or is he serving now and you're saying he "picked' this time?

I don't think it's a coincidence that Boras called MLB now right before the series with the Giants. While Prince has to serve the suspension immediately as a result of his agreement with MLB, he basically got to pick the appeal date. If there was an official appeal, MLB would have picked the date for him.

So Prince got to pick when he would be suspended, but still also got to appeal and get the suspension reduced.

Selig was never really attached to the team, he just ran it into the ground to support his revenue sharing agenda. When I saw the video I said right off that it would be reduced to 1 to 2 games, there is no way thats a 3 game suspension act. If he bumped him it was the lightest tap ever.

What video?

No network really showed the whole argument

I don't think it really was a problem that the suspension was reduced-it was the way that it was reduced that is not consistent with what MLB usually does.

Many people swear that Selig is the only reason there's a franchise in Milwaukee.

Well they certainly become a more viable franchise once the profits from revenue sharing come in.

Revenue sharing is suffering from the law of unintended consequences. The effect it is having seems to be the opposite of what is supposedly supposed to do: allow weaker market teams to contend with the big boys. When, in fact, it allows bottom dwellers to stay that way with very little monetary consequence. That's not to say it isn't valuable for promoting and preserving some level of parity in the game, but it can do just as much bad as it can good. We're probably another decade away from being able to accurately weigh in on its overall effect though.

True, when you have a small market team which is also poorly run like the Pirates they can stay profitable now instead of needing new ownership.

My statement was slightly sarcastic, when Selig first owned the team I'm sure he was passionate about it but at some point it was pretty clear he wasn't even trying to field a winning team, he just spinned his wheels every year while pushing his revenue sharing plans.
