BTW, our only hope right now is for A-Rod to break the record. I can't picture just about any other active hitter getting to the 700's.

i don't like conine's chances . . .

there was an espn.com article that said that the only current baseball players who have a chance, using a career projections model, were griffey jr, dunn, pujols, howard, and of course a-rod. though in a couple years they'll probably add prince fielder too. and all of those players, save for a-rod, had a less than 10% chance of reaching the record.

I could see Griffey getting to 700 but I think Arod is the only one with a chance to top Bonds on the list.

I'd have to agree. However, I think Griffey would have toppled 800 if it wasn't for his injuries :\

Griffey joins Mantle as the greatest "should have been" players ever.

Not should have been, his career is already awesome... but could have been HR king before a cheater is correct!

Hmm...Jimmy Foxx has to be considered, doesn't he?

Ya if not for his injuries Griffey would easiely top the 755 mark as well. In fact he probably would have topped 800 as well. He still will be a first ballot hall of famer but it would have been nice to see him top Bonds on the list for sure.

I dont think the Giants want him back. I may be wrong. So it may be up to another team to let him get it. I am not sure there would be a lot of teams looking for his services.

If Bonds asks for what he got this year ($16M), the Giants would be stupid to resign him. If he's willing to come back for around $5M for 2008 then it would be worth it to bring him back. But since his ego won't let him sign for that little, his time in SF should be over.

Why does Bonds need anymore money?

He is playing for his own good and not his team, all he cares about is himself. I am pretty sure him and his family are set for life. I wouldn't resign him for more than 3mil.

i'm sure i'm going to sound like some type of bonds apologist or giants fan, but i never get this holier-than-thou attitude people have when it comes to athletes and money. "oh, he's just out for himself. he doesn't care about his team." yeah, and so are many other athletes. i find it hard to believe that if we were in his situation we wouldn't try and max out our contract offers. it'd be like if A-Rod said, "well, i don't want people to think i'm greedy, so i better just take a 100 million dollar contract."

by the way, bonds is worth 8-10 million as a DH in my opinion.

Yeah, he could probably DH and go for 800. Now that he hears about ARod gunning for his record, I would expect him to try to extend the number a little bit.

Maybe he should take more steroids and just have another 70 HR year.

bonds is not a team player, but it has nothing to do with money. it has to do with hamstringing the team with his inability to play entire games, two games in a row, etc., and pulling himself out of games when the team needs him the most

so you're saying that you wouldn't want bonds' 388 PAs so far this season on the cubs because he wouldn't be able to play every day?

okay, this doesn't really fit the theme of the thread, but it's not worth it's own.

kinda made me laugh. (btw, "Mr. Murphy")

Someone was saying the guy could get slapped with a huge tax bill if he doesn't sell anyway. Nothing like paying $200k just for catching a baseball at a game, eh? I'm not sure if that's actually true or not though, I'm not tax expert.

Hmm...Jimmy Foxx has to be considered, doesn't he?

The year Foxx hit 58 homers he had two homers rained out in a game. He carried a newspaper clipping around his whole life showing he had hit 60 in one year.

Jimmie, and yes he should be considered. Problem is, he was a first baseman, and he just wasn't as good as Gehrig (.346 EqA versus .329 EqA). When I put Eddie Collins on the team as the utility IF, i was thinking more about guys who would be able to fill the utility role... but Foxx could arguably be ahead of Collins. Foxx was a better hitter, but Collins provided a lot more offense over the average 2B, and he was also good for a longer period of time than Foxx.
