Everyone knows that Kerry Wood will be activated tomorrow. The question is whose 25 man spot will he take, and more importantly, whose 40 man spot will he take since he is on the 60 day DL.

I'd guess Cherry is odd man out on the 25-man and Blanco is placed on the 60-day DL. Wouldn't hurt to do it to Guzman instead, as I'd guess both are done for the year with the big club. Also guessing that Murton is again odd man out when Ward is back.

Blanco to the 60 day makes sense and then when (if?) he is finally ready they can DFA Hill since they won't want to be carrying 3 catchers on the active roster (especially since Hill has no value as a pinch hitter).

I am not so sure about Murton going down when Ward comes back. He is hitting and Piniella has talked a lot about needing another RH bat. Hendry couldn't get one for him by trade so he has Murton by default. I would say that at the moment Cedeno is most at risk of going down when Ward comes back.

What is the effect of taking someone off the 40 man roster (other than they can't be called up)?

Outright removing them from it requires waivers, and the potential to lose them to any team who wants to put them on their own 40-man roster. Putting them on the 60-day DL just opens up the spot.

The Cubs won't take anyone off the 40-man midseason, especially when there are two candidates who could be placed on the 60-day DL. I think Guzman is more likely to head to the 60-day DL than Blanco.

(I also read somewhere that while Guzman was recovering slower than hoped for, there's a good chance he should be ready when rosters expand.)

Unless I'm mistaken, Blanco has been out for 60 already and Guzman is right there too. I wouldn't be surprised to see either moved to the 60 day DL. If Gooz isn't there yet, Blanco will be moved, and Gooz when Blanco is ready to be activated.

You're right, it's been 60 days for Blanco and a smidge less for Gooz.

Is there any hope left for Guzman? The guy just cannot stay healthy for any significant period of time.

Does anyone here think that none of this will be necessary when Kerry slips and falls in the shower this morning and lands back on the DL?

Until he gets hurt again?

Guzman's injury struggles has been more frustrating than Wood or Prior.

Before this year it was frustrating to see him hurt all the time. He's been a top prospect for 3 or 4 years now. The problem I have this year is the fact of jockeying him between starting and relieving. That can't be good on his fragile arm.

It's official. Kerry Wood activated, Rocky Cherry to Iowa, Angel Guzman to the 60-day DL.

Yes, because Guzman never had arm problems when the Cubs just left him as a starter.

He's never shown even a modicum of sustainable durability, no matter what the role or how he was handled. Evidently, throwing a baseball isn't good on his fragile arm.
