I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it seems to me that the Cubs usually play pretty well when Ramirez has a day off.

Where's Fred?

Of course I could be way off. I just know that I have attended two games so far this year where he hasn't played and the Cubs have won big both times. Once against SF in Wrigley and the other last Saturday night in Cincinnati.

murton,cedeno and jones will go a combined 0-12 with 6 k's

Nah 4-12

Murton goes 4-4

Murton will go 0-4 with 2 K's and a missed cut off man. he will also fail to score from 3rd on a sac fly resulting in mt. lou erupting and engulfing sheffield in fiery ash.

jones...is starting against a lhp, khemennu said enough about this.

Well, I don't necessarily think it's angst so much as it is just loss of focus.

But yes, a slow pitcher definitely hurts themselves defensively (more so than runs being scored for him).

Prove it.

Haha, nothing in that statement needs to be proved. Defenders flat out despise slow pitchers and tend to not make as many great plays behind them.

If this is "definitely" true it will be rather easily proved.

Is that the only response you can ever come up with, "prove it"?

How about this...how about you prove to me that it isn't true, then we can talk.

I don't need statistics to prove to me what I know to be an effect on pitcher's after playing for 20 years as an amateur and professional.

not any time soon. i believe its four more years after this until nine in his career. he is, however, the best closer on the planet you know.

Huh, I thought he started pitching in 2000 for Hanshin. Damn.

six years.

Cool...I can wait three more years.

actually, i expect that rule to be gone within a year of the next wbc. something has to be done. fujikawa or fukudome might just be the guys to test it. if not, nishioka might.

Actually soft-tossing lefties DO show a higher ability of control (in a good way) of their BABIP. In fact I used a wierd method to show that only two pitchers have meaningful control over their BABIP. They were Barry Zito and Jamie Moyer. This data suggests that notion is absurd.

Another day off for Ramirez? He must be hurting.

On the pregame they just said the Cubs don't want to play him back-2-back days when there is a night game followed by a day game. Thus with the day game tomorrow, he sits tonight.

"CUBS score 4.67 R/G overall.... 3.00 R/G when Hill pitches

"

This says a lot.

Score some for Hill, plz.

I think it says guys don't like playing behind Rich. He is slow, throws lots of pitches and really doesn't get the defense involved (Lots of K's and flyballs).

fielders tend to get involved when there's a fly ball

will you please tell that to Jacque.

I keed, I keed. aside from last night, Jacque has been pretty solid defensively.

i will predict that the cubs win tonight, scoring most of their runs off the "soft tossing lefty." i like lou's moves (rhyme unintentional) with the lineup, changing it around trying to find something that works against this style of pitching (9-16 against them, iirc).

6-3.

Joe Morgan everybody.

I'll tell you what. Pick any four pitchers who pitched in the majors for 5 or more years. I look up the game logs for the runs/game and errors/game and compare them to the data for the days when the pitcher didn't pitch. I'll run some simple descriptive and inferential statistics and see if there is a corelation between runs/scored and errors/game.

If I find that there are no data that support your conclusion you ban yourself from every posting on here. If there is a corelation I will seek your forgivness and never darken the door of NSBB again.

Deal?

agreed. all righty lineups turn soft tossing lefties into dart throwers. make them hit 15 and 17 occassionally instead of just locking in on 16 and 19. I just wish there was a better option than Jones.

Fortunately for him, even if there is correlation he's not wrong. What you would be doing wouldn't even be relevant. It wouldn't prove anything .... just that when there are more errors there are more runs scored. He didn't say anything against that.

I predict that, rather than the score, this will be written on the scorecard at least 10 times today when one of our right-handers fails to get a hit off Moyer. I think this is all we can expect of this team against any lefty.
