I still can't believe they're doing this.

It's just crazy.

The funniest part is when fans of other teams say, "They'll just blow it like they always do," as though the Cubs did this sort of thing with any type of regularity.

The Cubs are rarely in contention late in the season. They say that like they always start hot and blow it late. In fact, the Cubs have pretty regularly been bad all season.

I can't believe it either...And how they are doing it? No homeruns? Getting on base? Solid starting pitching? It's an amazing transformation from that worthless team two months ago.

I don't get it either. Does the completely useless by September acronym really apply to anything besides the 1969 and 2004 teams? I can't think of any other teams that were actually successful enough to choke in the regular season.

In either 1977 or 1979 (I don't recall which) the Cubs were in first place and 25 games over .500, then collapsed and finished at exactly .500. And in 1973 they were within 2 1/2 games of first in September.

That was in '77. Total collapse. They had 51 wins at the break, if memory serves.

As for 2001, that team shouldn't have won 70 games, much less the 88 they actually won.

The cubs had talent in the mid 80s to early 90s, but management was atrocious. Many of those years, they were right in the thick of things at the break, but just couldn't finish.

yeah, its nice that we lost less games and all...but wins are harder to get....and we got 5 more games to play that the brewers dont have to play....why is it a 5 game difference anyway? i mean, Mil 106 games played, cubs 101 games played...we got double headers comin up?

and still we gotta WIN

Actually since the Cubs are over .500, losses are harder for them to get.

Cubs only have 5 off-days left this season. Brewers have 7 (including 7/30 off-day). Brewers also finish out the season with 17 straight games without an off-day.

I think we only have to make up the Card game postponed after Josh Hancock died. The rest are probably off-days when the Brewers played.

Wins are harder to get? Yeah, I guess, but being in first place in the lost column is being in first place in the only thing that matters.

yes, wins are are always harder to get...duh! and being in first in the loss column is nothing if you got more games to play(more chances to lose)

Actually it's only three. And that difference is because of the postponed April 29 Cards game that was cancelled when Hancock died. The St. Louis game is scheduled to be made up on September 15. The other difference is probably just due to the schedule.

The Cubs will make up one game tomorrow. In August the Brewers have 4 off days while the Cubs have 2 and, barring any more postponements, the teams will be even on games played going into September. Both teams play the same number of games in October but the Cubs have an extra off day due to the aforementioned doubleheader against the Cardinals.

The reason that leading in losses matters more than Wins is because if you lead in Losses you have complete and total control of your own destiny.

It is always possible to make up Wins, its impossible to make up Losses. You have to depend on the other team to lose for you. Of course with 50+ games to go, it doesn't matter.

With the Brewers playing in a cozy closed-roof stadium, and the Cubs playing at Wrigley, it's probably going to be the case most years that the Crew will have played a few more games than us.

I'm a little confused on the whole "wins are harder to get" thing though. Yes, winning is difficult, but making up losses is impossible without help...

One very odd thing that I noticed is that since the ASB, the Brewers and Cubs play almost the exact same schedule from that point to the end of August. Giants/D'backs, Cards/Reds, Phillies/Mets, Astros/Rockies, Giants/D'backs, then each other.
