Can you say "unnecessary distraction?"

I think bringing Sammy back would be a terrible idea. Can you imagine the media circus? Not to mention the bad blood with players and management.

The team is playing well, and there are plenty of other good options for an additional outfield bat. I hope Jim is working hard on it. Either that, or hope Murton starts to contribute.

Can you say "CANCER" No thanks. This years team is all about TEAM. It's pretty clear Lou doesn't like sideshows and feels, despite the #'s, it's counter productive to winning.

Have you read any of the reports about the 2007 version of Sosa - model teammate, hard worker, etc, etc?

well, other than the boombox thing, no one really said anything negative about him until his last year with the Cubs. PR can be a powerful force.

Didn't Texas sign him to a minor league contract? Wouldn't that mean they could just send him down rather than release him, or would there be a clause stating that if he made the team, he could no longer be sent down?

I don't get why they would just release him.

Because they feel its time to give Jason Botts a few months of consistent play time in the bigs. Sammy is (at least partially) holding that up.

His name is Sammy Sosa and he has 70RBIs which means you can't send him down to the minors.

Regardless of the name and his stats, I just don't think that's possible. Taking a year off and signing a minor league deal doesn't change the fact that his service time allows him to reject the assignment, and would require that he pass waivers.

I don't think he could be sent down without clearing waivers and without his permission. The former might happen; I doubt the latter would.

I dunno, while I enjoy the thought of being able to bring Sammy back for a playoff run and hoping that he can contribute and allow the Cubs to give him a proper send-off, I'm pretty mixed to the idea when I begin to measure my reaction. He's pretty good against lefty's, cheap, serviceable in the field. On the other hand I'd have to read a bunch of moranic posts about how he's blocking Murton, when it seems pretty obvious though not necessarily 100% conclusive, that Murton seems to suffer from the Jeremy Giambi effect and thus is most valuable when accruing significant playing time, i.e., not platooning with Cornelius.

I'm 33. I grew up on Sandberg, Grace and Maddux. I never saw Jenkins, Banks or Santo. So (big build up) in my opinion Sammy Sosa has been the greatest Cubs player that I have ever seen....Regardless if we sign or don't sign him if he is released I think it is a shame and a blight on the Cubs if he is not welcomed back with open arms. Steriods who cares! We have all cheered and aplauded his ability to hit the baseball. He made a couple of stupid mistakes at the end of his Cubs career. Big fricken deal!

Sammy is an all time Cub!

Where do I sign?

I'd welcome Sammy back with open arms.

Of course, Roast and I are probably the two biggest Sammy marks on here.

He'd have to bribe Marquis to give him #21 back, though.

Better yet, we could just tell Marquis we'll cut him if he doesn't give it up. Or even better, we could just cut him anyway.

Why? Marquis eats six innings for lunch every five days.

He's no Mad Dog but he gets it done for the most part.

Haha, I wonder if having Sammy back would get the good Soriano going again, much like Pie was able to do? Might be worth it for that alone!

Eating six innings for lunch doesn't mean much when he craps out 5 runs in the process.

I am willing to forgive and forget. If the cubs decide to upgrade at center or short sammy would be a nice additionial weapon to have. Sammy as the lone upgrade to the offense would not be enough.

I care about one thing, and that is whether a player can help the Cubs win this year. I don't care about the past; bygones are bygones.

Well FWIW, he hasn't done that in 2/3rds of his starts. Though, he appears to be trending downward as he's done it more often than not recently.
