Phil Rogers claims the Cubs are scouting Ty Wigginton

The Cubs' Ken Kravec was there, according to reports, but not to watch Trachsel. He was there to see Tampa Bay's Ty Wigginton, who delivered a home run off Trachsel, his 16th of the season.

Sources indicate the Cubs are looking at the versatile Wigginton as a right-handed bat off the bench and a super utility man (he's been a regular at third base and first base and also can play second and the corner outfield spots).

Haha, my thread won, even though it was probably like a half-second late since it was on top on the forum.

anyway, i'd have interest for the right price. he's nothing special, but could be helpful is used properly.

I don't particularly mind the idea, but who does he replace? Cedeno?

Ward?

if they pick him up to fill the Ward role (or possibly, Floyd-like level of PT) and we don't give up much, I quite like the deal. Of course, the "if we don't give up too much" is always a disclaimer ;)

as long as Jim isn't done dealing after this and assuming he comes cheap, i'll buy it. I didn't realize he was as versatile as he is, nice reserve player.

He's okay, but I'm not sure that he's much better than Scott Moore

He hits right-handed. Moore hits left-handed.

And yes, he's better.

He has as many HR as Cubs team leaders. Would provide a nice bit of pop off the bench and give the Cubs their third super utility player.

a little better, but PECOTA projects them very similarly. I'd take him in a trade, but given that Tampa expects the moon in any trade, it won't be worth it.

Good target. Not a free agent until after 2009.

I don't see this as a good thing. How many of these utility types do we need on the roster? He's arby-eligible after this season, meaning he'll probably be looking at a raise into the $5M range. If we're collecting Ty Wigginton for the future then we might as well just give away Eric Patterson, since he'll have no shot at making the roster. And then you have a moderately-expensive player putting up numbers similar to a guy who could do it for less than 10% of the price. Unless you're the Yankees, bad idea.

we could always trade him when we're done with him this season, assuming hendry/lou wants him as a righty bench option for the stretch run.

if the price is right, i'm in favor of getting ty.

for what it's worth, ty has a career .278/.350/.488 line against lefties

nice. sounds like a good guy to be looking into acquiring.
