Interesting thoughts from the guy who loves to hear himself talk.

NEW YORK -- Curt Schilling says that Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire's refusals to address accusations of steroids use are tantamount to admissions.

"If someone wrote that stuff about me and I didn't sue their [butt] off, am I not admitting that there's some legitimacy to it?" he said on HBO's "Costas Now."

I don't see anything Schilling says here that's out of line. Yeah, he likes to hear himself talk, but it sounds about right to me. He's even calling out pitchers who used roids.

I think all players should feel like this if they didn't cheat. If I'm busting my butt for hours & hours to get ready for a season and then to stay ready for 162+ games, and someone else is just pumping some roids & HGH??? Damn right I'm going to be upset, and I'm going to say something about it.

Antone else read the title of this thread and think, "I knew it!! Schilling was on roids during the world series!!!"

i didn't think that, since I'd heard Schill's comments already. but yeah... i immediately noticed the wording :)

The best sports reporting is on HBO. Between Inside the NFL, Real Sports and Costas Now, you'd be hard-pressed to find more investigative and feature pieces that show the behind the scenes of the sports world.

That same episode the Schilling was on had an interview with one of Bonds "pharmacists" as well as waffling from Bud Selig.

Meanwhile, ESPN has a town hall meeting on Bonds and The Bronx is Burning. :?

"It goes to the Mark McGwire thing in Congress. I mean, I'm a huge Mark McGwire fan. But I just always thought it was very simple: If you did something and someone asks you if you did it and you didn't do it, you say no. Any other answer than no is some form of yes, isn't it?"

Bonds reaction to Costas Now/Bob Costas...............

Having been called a few names over the years, Barry Bonds must think he has earned the right to throw around some of his own. He reacted to Bob Costas' interview of BALCO chemist Patrick Arnold by calling Costas a "little midget man who absolutely knows [bleep] about baseball, who never played the game before."

Costas responds...........

A day after Barry Bonds called him a "little midget man who knows (nothing) about baseball," broadcaster Bob Costas said he wasn't upset with the San Francisco Giants slugger and responded with a jab of his own.

"As anyone can plainly see, I'm 5-6 1/2 and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally," Costas said Thursday in a telephone interview.

"I've actually always had a pretty cordial relationship with Barry," Costas said. "I have no ill feelings toward him personally. I regard him as one of the greatest players of all time who got inauthentic boost and then became a superhuman player. I wish him no ill whatsoever."

Costas said he understood why Bonds might have denigrated him.

"He's under tremendous scrutiny and some pressure. It's no big deal," Costas said. "This is a consequence of doing your job, and I've never tried to do my job in any case with the intention of calling attention to myself. I think if people watch the program, they can judge for themselves."

Like this is the first time he's thrown around curse words?

More likely, Bonds has no way to argue the facts of his steroid use, so he must resort to calling names and throwing up red herrings in the hopes that people won't notice he can't deny the actual truth of his cheating.

Via the Associated Press, in response to Barry Bonds calling Bob Costas “that little midget man who absolutely knows jack s— about baseball” last night, comes Costas’ response:

“As anyone can plainly see, I’m 5-6 1/2 and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally,” Costas said Thursday in a telephone interview.

Hahaha...I'm not a huge fan of Costas and his derogatory Cubs comments all the time, but that's high comedy.

Barry just needs to stop deniying this. One look at his rookie card is all it takes to see that this guy is the poster child for steriod use:

The latest retort from Costas aka the "little midget."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20033326/

Costas believes Bonds is a great player, but “there’s no way he could have been remotely near the greatest player of all time without performance-enhancing drugs. His lifetime batting average was .290 through 1998 and he hit one homer every 16 times at bat. Lots of guys were better than that. He then went into the stratosphere when he started juicing.”

Dismissing Bonds’ comments about his height, Costas said, “It wouldn’t matter if I were the mayor of the Munchkin City. What matters is the validity of the information and the validity of the comments I have made, and very often when people have no credible argument — and in this case Barry Bonds has no credible argument — they resort to nonsense and ad hominem attacks, and that’s what he did.”

I'm not sure I'd consider 28 to be "lots," especially when some of the other players who have hit home runs at that rate are thought of as having a little help from performance-enhancing drugs. It's not like there have been a few hundred people in the history of the game that have averaged a home run per 16 at-bats.

Costas is not correct. He actually averaged 1 HR every 17.6 AB. However that does not take into account the fact that he started playing MLB at age 21. From age 27 (1992) to 33 (1998) (his prime years) he average 1 HR every 13.2 AB. That is not very common and puts him in the elite category of hitters. It's what has happend after age 33 that is so suspicious. However, look at Aarons later years, and no one is acusing him of steriods.

BTW, his lifetime batting average is still only 298.

Bonds is probably a steriod user, but how many of the pitchers he faced were on the stuff. It's not an excuse and I don't condone steriod use. I think the entire era should have a seprate set of records, kind of like the "Dead Ball era" before Ruth changed the game.
