The Reds find themselves in the same place they were at the start of the month, sitting on commodities that they think are more valuable than everyone else does. I'm not saying they're right or wrong, but the idea that this is a pure seller's market isn't true. There's a very limited group of teams that need Ken Griffey, Jr. and none of those--save the Cubs--are on his list of places he'd go. Adam Dunn is willing to go anywhere, knowing he'll cash in on the free agent market if he's dealt, but thus far, no one has met Krivsky's price; given what I'm hearing, I don't think that price is coming down. The Reds have spurned any feelers on David Weathers, and are trying to push Todd Coffey instead.

There's still a week left. Either teams will up there offer, or Krivsky will bring his price down. Not sure if he will bring his price down on Griffey or Dunn, which I'm not sure I'll do either considering we control both Griffey and Dunn for another year if we chose, but his price will come down on the likes of Loshe, Conine, Hatteberg, etc.

Now that doesn't help the Cubs, but that's my two cents.

griffey in a cubs uniform would be pretty sweet. i dont see it happening though.

and is it definitive that the cubs are not gonna be adding a lot or any payroll, or is it just based on what has been implied thus far?

If we give them some good prospects i'm sure they'd pick up some of the salary to make his remaining salary respectable to us. Now it just comes to the question of whether or not you're willing to give up some good prospects for a guy up there in age.

I think the Reds will move both Griffey & Dunn a good friend of mine is a corporate rep for a company in Cincinnati and to his own admittance is not a baseball fan but he say that's the talk there. But then again he claims he saw the Cubs and the Orioles play in Baltimore back in the early 80's.

Talk where? In the media? By the fans? That doesn't mean anything. It's pretty simply. Krivsky is going to get what HE wants for Dunn and Griffey or he will hang onto them into the offseason and probably into next season. Dunn's price tag is cheaper then Griffey's, but both are going to cost you something nice.

Either somebody is going to step up and make a deal, or nothing will happen. I'm not sure if I like the strategy or not, but that's what is going to happen.

McDonough and Hendry have been claiming for awhile now that if the Cubs were in contention this season, there would be extra room in the budget to make acquisitions.

What that means dollar-wise is anyone's guess.

For Griffey?

Marshall, Patterson, and a pitching prospect along with the Reds not having to pay any of his salary.

Murton & Marshall

Murton can't play RF, and even if he could that is the position Josh Hamilton should be playing.

Dunn is the Reds Lfer, for now. Jay Bruce will probably be playing LF in Cincinnati a year from now.

Would you expect more, less, or the same for Dunn prospects-wise?

Less.

The Reds have done an excellent job of rebuilding Griffey's trade value after all the injuries and his dissapointing season last year, and it's time to cash in.

Definitely. It would be stupid for the reds to hold on to him past the trade deadline. His value will never be higher than it is right now for the rest of his career. (IMO)

Yeah when you consider the year he is having, his age, and his history of injuries I can't see his value being any higher.

As much as it would pain me to see Junior traded, for the Reds sake I would rather see him gone then Dunn. I wouldn't be totally against trading them both either.

Cubs need Griffey

Griffey wants to (wouldn't mind to) come to the Cubs

please Jim.

I love HBO's John From Cincinnati being your icon. Or as John would reply:

Wait, so the Reds won't trade 37 year old David Weathers, who isn't that great but would probably bring a decent return? But they'll trade Todd Coffey in a year that he's pitched like crap and diminished his trade value? If true, Krivsky really is an idiot. Wait what am I saying, we already know this.

That's pretty much what I thought. Why would you trade Coffey instead of Weathers, especially if you're going to trade off guys like Dunn and Griffey for prospects anyway? It makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm sorry I didn't ask him where the chatter was I didn't think it was relevant to the the conversation. He was trying to make conversation with me and knowing I was a huge Cubs fan he was mentioning that the buzz there is that Griffey and Dunn weren't going to be around much longer. Honestly my life won't stop if it doesn't happen and it won't be enhanced if it does. Reading what you wrote reminded me of that conversation and I was just saying I wouldn't be surprise to see the Reds move one or both of those players.
