Two rumors from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

The Braves have needs, including pitching. If they could get an impact starter or a package of pitchers for Jarrodd Saltalamacchia, they might pull the trigger. They've also talked to the Rangers about first baseman Mark Teixeira, a slugger and Gold Glover who could earn more than $10 million in arbitration next season and then become a free agent. Saltalamacchia hasn't played much since the Braves signed first baseman Julio Franco, who made his fifth start in six games Tuesday. McCann has gotten healthy and needs few days off. ... Saltalamacchia was the Braves' top-rated prospect before the season and has further elevated his stock with a strong performance in his first stint in the majors. -- Atlanta Journal-Constitution

If the Braves' front office makes any moves before the trade deadline, Chipper Jones hopes it will be in the pitching department. "I think the onus of our moves needs to be [the pitching] staff," he said. "I'd like to see us get a lefty reliever. Because there comes a point where all the big left-handed bats in our division ... we're going to have to have someone in the seventh or eighth inning who can get those guys out. "That's why the loss of Gonzo really hurt us." -- Atlanta Journal-Constitution

If the Braves might accept a "package of pitchers" for Salty and Chipper thinks they need a lefty reliever, how about a package of Marshall, Eyre/Ohman, plus ???? for Salty.

I don't like the idea of trading any of our starting pitchers...who would take over for Marshall?

plus Pie.

I'd do it. And as Outshined One aserted about two weeks ago, sign Andrew to play CF in the offseasn.

I think the Braves might want Hill though.

It's going to take Rich Hill and decent prospects at a minimum to get Salty.

If they'd take Marshall, Ohman, and a prospect, Hendry would have done this months ago. (I hope)

Must be the fine Dutch...um...air getting to my head. O:)

If we gave up Hill or Marshall who fills out our rotation? Giving up a starter w/o getting one in return is a scary proposition to me.

I didn't realize the Braves were playing Franco that much. He's 48 (49 in a couple weeks) and has an OPS under .600, and the Braves pick him up and start him everyday in the easiest position to play on the entire field? That's just a strange move, and if the Braves use Franco in order to justify trading Salty it will be even stranger.

Maybe it wasn't you, but it wasn't me either. I do like the idea.

Give me a break!!

Starting pitchers: 5 to a team, dozens in the minor leagues (of varying quality levels), 30 big league teams.

Good, young, slugging, catchers: What, maybe five in all of baseball?

Cubs internal catching options: The Great Geovanny Soto? The just-drafted Josh Donaldson?

Action: I would happily trade the replaceable Rich Hill, the replaceable Will Ohman (or if they preferred, Clay Rapada or Carmen Pignatiello from Iowa), **AND** Felix Pie for Saltalamacchia and an Atlanta top-10 minor league infielder prospect not on the 40-man.

How would I replace the .500 pitcher Rich Hill? Sean Gallagher. Mark Holliman. Ryan Dempster to rotation. Trade for a castoff veteran.

I'm going with Gallagher.

Replacing Hill with Gallagher/Holliman/Dempster/bargain bin refuse is an enormous dropoff, you know that.

I'd feel much better (obviously) trading Marshall over Hill. A trade for Salty with Marshall as the centerpiece I do without a doubt, if Hill's the centerpiece, I'm not sure I do it.

I'd also give up a ton for Salty.

But didn't we acquire Kendall because we didn't want to go down the stretch with rookie catchers? I'd go down the stretch with THIS rookie catcher, though!

Salty would be great.

But, I think Jeff Clement from Seattle could be had at a cheaper price since he is blocked by Johjima.

He will be relegated to DH and Seattle can always find a slugging DH. Make Seattle an offer and see what they're asking.

I love the thought of getting Salty and his wonderful potential, but I am amazed at how highly everyone rates another team's prospect(don't forget that right now, that's all he is), while downgrading the Cubs' players and prospects. Marshall has shown that he is a solid #3 or #4 left-handed starter, while Ohman has done a good job as a major league LOOGY for a few years. Now people want to add Pie who has been billed as our top prospect with 5-tool potential. Does Salty come with a money-back guarantee? I don't mind overpaying for a proven player (Cabrera, Arod, etc.) if the situation is right, but I don't think Salty has proven himself at the major league level just yet.

Clement would probably also love the move to Des Moines considering he's from Marshalltown and would be blocked by the fantastic Kendall/Blanco duo

this is a very good take on the whole situation...no reason to give up a ton for salty...no reason at all...

besides...the braves really need a firstbaseman...if they don't get texeria then they will get that dude from the angels and santana...

Kendall is a free agent after the season. Maybe I missed your point.

I'm guessing if he hits over the Mendoza line he'll be re-signed

Saw this on Foxsports rumor page.

The Braves are believed to be offering the Rangers a multi-player package that includes Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who likely would catch for Texas, though he also can play first base. The Rangers also could send a reliever to the Braves along with Teixeira, possibly left-hander Ron Mahay.

They said the Dodgers were another team looking at Teixeira.

I just can't see the Braves being overly enthusiastic about trading a good player to one of their main competitors for the wild card.

Are you seriously using win/loss as a basis to your argument? Hill gets no run support, and win/loss is a terrible stat to judge a pitcher

The man thinks Don Kessinger was good. What did you expect?
