Alright, fine. Maz has come up in every discussion of a 2B hall of fame candidate since, he came during the Sandberg nomination, and I'll be willing to bet he'll come up during the Biggio nomination and beyond. The hall voters made their bed when they put the guy in, he'll be the calling card now forever. I don't see what was so wrong about me merely bringing him up.

My point is the group that voted in Maz doesn't even exist in the same way anymore. The vet committee has been overhauled because of stuff like Maz getting in.

The guy was never even the best player on his own team.

yes he was, and outside of one or two years, the same could be said about anyone that played on a team with babe ruth or willie mays.

The guy was never even the best player on his own team. I don't see how he is a sure fire hall of famer.

No steroid allegations + magic number 3,000 = HOF.

I don't see how being the best player on your team matters. He was one of the best 2B in the business for a long, long time.

Plus, come on. Mazeroski got in on .260 BA, .299 OBP(!!), .367 SLG. Nobody can tell me Craig's .282/.365/.434 doesn't blow that out of the water 6 ways to Sunday. Bigs played longer, too.

Without commenting on Biggio's qualifications, we're not really using Maz as the baseline, are we?

He's in, isn't he? It's a 2B comparison, Maz is in and Bigs will be voted on. How is that not a valid comparison? Not my fault the voters put Maz in.

Fred Lindstrom, Jimmy Collins and Brooks Robinson are in the Hall of Fame, therefore Ron Santo has also been selected.

you can't win with that argument on this board. i've tried to explain that our favorite beleagured radio color man wasn't even one of the top 3 players on his own team, but have been shouted down ad nauseum

and oh look, the other three guys who were "better than him" - even though when you take positional differences into account, Ronnie was probably just as good as Billy Williams - are in the Hall of Fame! And if you don't think Ronnie was ever the best player on his team, I suggest you review the team stats from 1964, 1966 and 1967. In 1969 he was arguably the best player on the team (Hands and Jenkins also come into play there).

Which two are we kicking out of the Hall of Fame?

I've always thought Ron should be in. Is that just another one of my stupid notions?

So that logic leaves out Lou Gehrig, Sam Crawford, Billy Williams, Charlie Gehringer, Yogi Berra, Harry Heilmann, Juan Marichal, Willie McCovey, Enos Slaughter, Willie Stargell, Mickey Cochrane, Roy Campanella, etc

* edit: just saw that other people had already replied in a similar vein. I just saw that statement and had to comment it on it immediately.

That team won at least 1 WS and the Yankees kept them from having several. The Cubs with Banks/Williams/Jenkins and Santo never even came close to the post season. I know it isnt Santo's fault but that is something that a lot of voters consider. Heck Pee Wee Reese is far from a HOFer numbers wise. He was just the captain on that great team. So winning is a important part of going to the Hall.
