No huge splash. I see Kenny Lofton happening, and another starter wouldn't surprise me. Unfortunately, that would spell the end for Hill or Marshall, not Marquis.

we neeeeeed power, but i don't see him getting a griffey or dunn, unfortunately. probably matt stairs and maybe a bullpen arm, though that's so unnecessary. kenny lofton would be decent, i guess, but hendry really needs to focus his powers.

Rumor: Keep in mind this is from the Cubs.com board so it shoots down most of the credibility, but two people (one of which who I know is a normal poster there who doesn't create crazy threads) are saying the Cubs are going hard after Nady and the Cubs have an offer of (off the top of my head) Hoffpair, Moore, Gallagher and PTBNL for Nady and Marte, and the other poster said he's heard mostly the same players but just for Nady and no Marte. Again, don't shoot the messenger since it's from a usually unreliable board but it's the rumor time of the year so I thought i'd throw it out there for the hell of it. IIRC, the Score did report awhile back that we were interested in Nady.

 

And by the way, I scanned Marte's numbers and :shock: . I remember him having a rough go in recent seasons but he is shooting lights out from the pen this year.

Keep in mind that there is very little trade chatter going on in the league right now. If we got a starter (which is useless to us) and Lofton, that would be a huge splash

Well to be fair the guy who mentioned the players wasn't the guy who I knew was a good poster. The guy who's a regaular guy over there and respected (over 4000 posts) actually didn't specify any names, just that we had an offer on the table for only Nady and not Marte, and we're waiting for Pittsburgh's response. FWIW, he says his brother knows some people in the FO.

 

I mean these things always turn out to be bogus, but since i've seen the guy actually talk some good baseball over there before he doesn't seem like the typical Cubs.com guy, but who knows.

I think within the next week or so we'll know whether the Cubs can take on more salary.

Paraphrasing a Hendry interview from about a week ago on what deals he's looking to make: "I'm always looking to improve the team, but I also know we have nice pieces here. I'm not going to look to go out and replace Ryan Dempster. I'm not going to go look for someone to replace Ryan Theriot."

 

I know we should always look for improvement, but we're winning and Theriot is doing a solid job both ways and providing some spark into the lineup and clubhouse. He's done just about everything you can ask for and it just doesn't seem like you should reward that by replacing the guy, especially when things are clicking on the field and in the clubhouse. Obviously, Tejada is and always will be the better player, but I just don't think you go out of your way to improve something that isn't really that much of a problem when you have other problems much bigger than replacing a solid #2 hitter.

I'm guessing minimal moves for a RH power bat and a LH reliever. Nady and Marte makes the most sense of any rumor I have seen. Both are cheap and having decent seasons. Nady has played CF 9 times this year too (although not very beautifully), so he gives you a little insurance in case Jacque sucks again.

I just don't think you go out of your way to improve something that isn't really that much of a problem when you have other problems much bigger than replacing a solid #2 hitter.

 

First, #2 hitter isn't a position. Second, any and every team who wants to win should be looking to upgrade wherever and whenever they can. SS is one of these places for the Cubs.

 

I'm not hot on Tejada because of the wrist injury, but if we're comparing him with Theriot I think I'll take my chances with Tejada pretty much every time.

 

That being said, let's see what Ronny can do.

I would be all over this deal. I do like Gallagher, but he is replaceable and Moore looks like a AAAA player. Hoffpair is injured, but I don't think he had much of a future with the Cubs. I'm not sure the Pirates are willing to trade Nady because they're starting to build a pretty stable and young team.

Nady will probably get $4+ next season in arbitration, so I can see the Pirates being willing to trade him.

 

Also, if they get Gallagher, they'd probably trade one of their young pitchers like Snell for a hitter.

 

Maybe for Hawpe to replace Nady or, if they were lucky, for Saltalamacchia and they could put Doumit in RF full-time.
