every team has idiot / trashy fans

the Cubs fans that fit that description sit in the bleachers.

This is the difference/problem. I can't think of any other park that has a portion of seating that attracts/caters to that type of fan. I like the proposed idea for fining people heavily who are caught throwing stuff. It really needs to stop, especially since it only takes one or a couple people for it to snowball out there.

It is embarrassing. That's why I'd actually feel bad if Barry Bonds broke the record at Wrigley. Like him or not, I think the field would be peppered with cups and debris, and it would tarnish a very significant moment in baseball history.

Bonds would deserve it... the guy is not only a cheater, but someone who broke the law by abusing illegal substances. He would have still been one of the greatest players in the modern era and a first-ballot Hall of Famer, but he had to cheat since he wanted attention.

And if you don't think steroid abuse is a big deal, look at Chris Benoit.

If Bonds deserves it, then boo the man. Don't make the entire city of Chicago look like jack@$$es because you dislike what one man has done. You can show your displeasure without disrupting the game and embarrassing a city. And just because you may not like that the record is being broken, doesn't mean there aren't people out there that consider this to be a historic occasion. Why ruin it for other people?

And I think lumping Bonds in with Benoit is going a bit too far. Last I checked, Barry Bonds hasn't killed anyone

If the team was really serious about cutting out that kinda behavior, they would stop selling beer in the bleachers period. Not a popular move, but an effective one i think.

I'm a Cards fan from central Illinois, grew up not hating the Cubs, but surely huge rivals. I guess I hated them when they were better.
In other words, you hate them this year. :D

On a related note, why on earth were there like 20 guys all dressed in blue to go clean up the mess? I hope it was the grounds crew. I'd hate to think they had 20 guys all standing around game after game waiting for the field to get littered with trash.

Did you notice that when the guys in blue were running back to foul territory, the cameraman zoomed in on the really overweight guy for a solid five seconds? Like "hey, check out this fatty running!" I felt kinda bad for him.

i was laughing pretty hard. he was trying so hard to keep up but he just kept falling further and further back.

Rick Sutcliffe (I think it was him) said "They should make this a daily thing at Wrigley, Not the fans throwing trash on the field but the grounds crew getting some extra running in." when the camera was on the overweight guy.

At a certain point, it's no longer certain Cubs fans giving Chicago a bad name. It exends out to all Chicago sports fans. From the Sox fans who take it upon themselves to beat up anyone on the field, to Bears fans who openly hostile and disgusting to visiting New Orleans Saints fans in the 2006 NFC Championship game, and certainly the recent spat of Cubs fans who litter the field and charge Bob Howry for no discernable reason.

I hate to think of the city I love as a bunch of backwater hicks that can't hold their liquor and know right from wrong, but sports fans in this city are nothing to be proud of right now.

The few idiots make it that much harder for good fans to be taken respectably.

While all that stuff is frustrating, I don't think it's anywhere close to being indicative of the majority of fans in this town, nor do I think it's all that worse than any other major market sports town.

As stupid as things like the garbage-throwing is, I think a lot of people are overestimating how many other sports fans/teams/journalists/etc. care.

That may be the case. Or it may be the case that the most classless of "fans" are getting more brazen about how they display their stupidity.

No matter what though, I think we can all agree that the bad apples make it that much worse for the rest of us who just want to enjoy the game.

Maybe the fans figured since the organization allowed The Police to trash the outfield, it was o.k. for them to do it as well? :D Just sayin'.....

By the way, the whole New Orleans Saints thing was vastly overblown. The New Orleans media attacked us for photo shopped pictures that were floating around the internet, not actually problems at the game. Plus New Orleans is much worse place to attend a game,(just ask any one who attended last years Bears/Saints game in LSU). I admit that Solider Field is not the most friendly place in the world, but the NFC championship game in a city in which has not seen such a sight since Ryne Sandberg had a stach is not the best place for opposing fans to hang out. Overall Chicago is one of the top three best sports city.

I just saying stop the lies and open your eyes to the truth. As a Bears fan, I was greatly offended by the claims of the Saints and there fans and I really was offended that the national media ran with stories which were short on facts and a little bit of sore losers syndrome.

I honestly don't understand what compels people to do this. It's not one or two people, it's 20+ and it's not once or twice every fifth year. It happens two or three times every year. Part of me almost understands when your bullpen blows a 6 run lead in the top of the 9th. But after Ramirez drives in the winning run, on national television, when the team is playing it's best baseball......that I can remember EVER? Where is the logic in that?

Pathetic

They're going to wind up taking away the beer, and then will people ever be sorry.

Alright I'll say it, maybe that would be a good thing.
