The Chicago Cubs have signed former Florida State second baseman Tony Thomas and shortstop Darwin Barney, a two-time national champion at Oregon State. Thomas, the Cubs' third-round draft pick, and Barney, a fourth-rounder, each played their first professional game with the Mesa (Ariz.) Cubs on Wednesday. The Cubs have signed 16 of their top 20 picks and half of them are with the Hawks.

Oneri Fleita, the Cubs director of player personnel, said he will decide by the end of the weekend where Thomas and Barney will spent the rest of the season.

"Right now, the goal is to see what kind of shape they're in," Fleita said. "… I want to make sure we don't have too many second basemen on a team and too many shortstops. We'll work that out and by the end of the weekend we'll have a better idea what direction we're going to go in."

Looking at the 25-man, that's an unintentionally funny statement

Didn't they just draft a boatload of middle infield/utility types?

I wish I knew the pitching match up in Omaha. If it was any good I might make the drive up there.

David Wright for Omaha, TBD for Iowa - probably will be Hart or Webb.

Iowa doesn't have any starters to contribute to a "good" pitching matchup.

That is true, Hochevar just got called up to AAA though.

Bunch of MIF college guys, which is creating a bit of a logjam:

Boise:

2B/SS Jose Made (20th round)

2B Bill Moss (28th round)

Mesa:

2B/SS Tony Thomas (3rd round)

SS Darwin Barney (4th round)

2B Jeffrey Rea (18th round) - been playing OF for Mesa too

There is also an OF college logjam:

Peoria:

Brian Leclerc (31st round)

Boise:

Ty Wright (7th round)

Jonathan Wyatt (13th round)

Mesa:

Clark Hardman (9th round)

Leon Johnson (10th round)

Jeffrey Rea (18th round) - playing both OF and 2B

Luke Sommer (30th round)

LHP Michael Bunton (26th rounder from the College of Charleston) gets the start for Mesa.

It will be interesting to see if Soto starts tonight...

That's why I was scrolling through the thread, to see if it has been reported that he is or is not with Iowa Cubs tonight. If he's not starting then it's a pretty safe bet he's called up.

He's not in Omaha with the I-Cubs:

MVN | Road to Wrigley[/url]"]Soto Big League Bound?

By Mike Wellman | July 12th, 2007

An Iowa Cubs official said today that Geovany Soto will not be with the Iowa Cubs when they resume PCL play after the All-Star break tonight in Omaha.

He would neither confirm nor deny that Soto has been recalled by the Chicago Cubs, and refused to speculate on any corresponding roster move in the event of a Soto call-up since Chicago doesn’t play until tomorrow afternoon and would have until then to make room for Soto on their 25 man roster.

Stay tuned for further developments as rumors swirl about the makeup of the [Chicago] Cubs’ roster coming out of the mid-season intermission…MW

Never did I think Soto's callup would generate such interest.

Way to go, Hendry...for assembling a group of catchers that would cause such a reaction.

The Mesa game is ridiculous. Mesa was down 9-1 early before chipping away and scoring 5 in the top of the 9th to take a 12-11 lead. Then, they promptly blew the lead and it's now 12-12 after 9. Darwin Barney is 4/4 with 2 doubles, Luis Bautista has a solo HR and Nelson Perez has a 2-run HR.

Did anyone else watch the championship game when the announcer was like "this guy has the 'it' factor. Just like Derek Jeter. He's got it all going for him and he's a winner" yada, yada. I looked at his stats and wasn't terribly impressed but is he the real deal? Did Wilken get a steal for him in the 4th?

Jesse Estrada, not Mitch Atkins made the start for Daytona. Shoulda stuck with my guns and not believed MiLB.com.

Rocky Cherry made a 1-inning start for Iowa, Marco Carrillo got the start for Peoria.

He's a 21 year old college player at Mesa. I'd like to see him perform two levels higher before getting excited about him.

EPatt and Kroeger with HRs for Iowa. Amador, Rick, Reynolds each had one HR and Ryan Harvey hit two for Daytona.

Chris Walker was sent down from Iowa to Daytona.

Oneri Fleita is in Boise.

They're putting on a show for him, with 4 runs in the first. Mottram with a bases clearing double, Wyatt, Wright, and Clevenger with singles, and Smith drew a walk.

Cabrera isn't - 2 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 2 K/0 BB. The run in the second came on a two out double and an RBI single. :(
