Game-time temperature at Tempe, AZ for the Mesa Cubs game: 97 degrees

Game-time temperature at Boise, ID for the Boise game: 100 degrees

That should be incentive to get to full-season ball!!

dylan johnston has 13 errors in 22 games at boise. That's bad for a little league shortstop, let alone a fourth round draft pick.

I thought Buck Coats was in Iowa's OF, not back in Boise's IF.

Loss Snaps Cubs Four Game Winning Streak

By Deene Ehlis / http://www.iowacubs.com

Mike Aviles scored from 2nd base on an infield hit by Paul Phillips to give Omaha a 4-3 11 inning win over Iowa. Aviles started the 11th with a single, was sacrificed to second by Craig Brazell and after Bill McCarthy was walked intentionally, Phillips delivered his game winning hit, an infield single to 2nd base.

Derek Wathan, cut by the Iowa Cubs this spring, hit a 3 run homer to tie the game in the 8th inning. This was the Cubs first loss after leading through 7 innings this season.

Eric Patterson homered leading off the game, Josh Kroeger homered leading off the second and Patterson had a RBI single in the 5th.

With Nashville winning, Iowa trails the Sounds by six games in the American North division.

Cubs manager Buddy Bailey on Wathan's homer: "The big play too was the walk (Phillips walked 2 batters before Wathan's homer) to put the tying run at the plate. Wathan probably doesn't hit from one to three homeruns a year and we made a mistake and they tied the ballgame."

The loss ended a Cubs 4 game winning streak.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies dig early hole, lose to Mobile 10-3

Sevierville, TN – A four-run first inning by the visiting Mobile BayBears was too much for the Tennessee Smokies to overcome in a 10-3 loss on Thursday night at Smokies Park. In dropping the second game of this five-game series against Mobile, the Smokies fell to 11-11 for the second half of the season in front of 4,234 fans.

Mobile got on the scoreboard early, chasing Smokies starting pitcher Paul Schappert (3-5) in the first inning. After Emilio Bonafacio hit a leadoff double, he moved to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt. The BayBears highly touted prospect Justin Upton hit a line drive single into left field to give Mobile a 1-0 lead. Javier Brito then crushed a home run off the wind-screen fencing in left field to stake the BayBears to a 3-0 lead. Carlos Gonzalez followed suit in the next at bat with a home run of his own to increase the Mobile lead to four.

The BayBears got to Schappert again in the top of the third inning. After Brito doubled to center field, Gonzalez crushed his second home run of the contest to deep center field to score Brito and improve the BayBears lead to 6-0.

Tennessee struck back in the bottom half of the third to get back into the game. Sam Fuld started things off with a double off the wall in center field, his 15th of the season. Fuld moved to third base on a perfectly executed bunt single by second baseman Gary Cates Jr. That brought Tyler Colvin to the plate, who proceed to smack a line drive to center field off BayBears starter Matt Green (9-4). On a very strange play, Upton misplayed the line drive, with the ball getting past him and rolling to the wall. A hard charging Colvin motored around the bases to score both Fuld and Cates, and the Smokies pulled to within 6-3.

The Smokies would get no closer however, as the BayBears scored runs in their halves of the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings to put the game out of reach. Fuld led the Smokies offense tonight, going 4-5 with two doubles. Colvin, despite scoring three runs on the play, had the lone RBI for the Smokies tonight.

Harvey Homers Twice against Lakeland

By: Dan Watson

[LAKELAND, FL] Just one night after a disappointing loss to Lakeland, the Daytona Cubs made sure they didn't leave any opportunities by the wayside. Every Daytona hitter who played reached base, and the Cubs clubbed five home runs as they rolled, 8-4, over the Flying Tigers.

Kyle Reynolds stayed hot at the plate for the Cubs. He went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a stolen base and two runs scored. Reynolds also made an impressive play defensively at third base. Ryan Harvey went yard twice for Daytona and Jesse Estrada picked up the win as he didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning.

Daytona came out firing in the second inning against Lakeland starter Kyle Sleeth. Brian Dopirak and Reynolds started the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Harvey's sacrifice fly knocked home Dopirak to give the Cubs a one-run lead. The next batter, Alan Rick, ripped a two-run homer off the scoreboard in right-center as Daytona took a 3-0 advantage. The Cubs loaded the bases later in the inning and chased Sleeth from the mound, but couldn't push any more runs across.

Another power surge in the third inning inflated the Cubs' lead. With one out, Reynolds and Harvey blasted back-to-back solo home runs off reliever Ricky Steik, and the Cubs led, 5-0.

The Daytona deluge kept coming in the fourth. Chris Walker, in his first game of the season with the Cubs, singled on the infield. Two batters later, Chris Amador belted a two-run shot over the wall in left to put Daytona ahead 7-0.

A solo home run to left-center by Harvey off Jacob Ramos in the fifth inning gave the Cubs an eight-run edge.

Meanwhile, Estrada was masterful early in the game. The right-hander didn't allow a hit until the fifth, when he gave up a one-out solo home run to Rafael Mendez. With that, the Flying Tigers cut the deficit to 8-1. Lakeland scored another run in the fifth, when Ovandy Suero hit a potential double-play ball, but the throw back to first was errant, which allowed Joel Roa to score and make it 8-2.

Lakeland inched closer with a two-out rally in the seventh. Cody Collet singled up the middle, and Will Rhymes followed by lining a home run to right-center to cut the Daytona lead to 8-4.

All told, Estrada went seven innings, allowed four runs (three earned) on five base hits, walked three and struck out five. He improved his record to 2-2 on the season. Layden pitched a scoreless two innings to close it out as the Cubs improved to 9-12 in the second half. Sleeth, who didn't make it out of the second inning, dropped to 0-3 for Lakeland. The Flying Tigers are now 8-9.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Lose 8-5 Thursday

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs saw their three game winning streak come to an end in an 8-5 loss to the visiting Swing of the Quad Cities Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 12-8 on the half but they will remain in first place with a 1.5 game lead on the Swing and the Burlington Bees.

Quad Cities picked up a run in the first after two men were out against Chiefs starter Marco Carrillo. After sending down the first two batters in order, Steven Hill singled and Christian Reyes walked. Jared Schweitzer delivered an RBI single to put Quad Cities in front 1-0.

The Chiefs answered back in the bottom of the second inning off Swing starter Tyler Herron. Russ Canzler led the inning off with a single and Blake Lalli followed with a double that scored Canzler all the way from first base to tie the game 1-1.

The Swing regained the lead in the fifth inning after Tim Dorn and Christian Lopez both singled to start the inning. Carrillo walked Wilmer Alvarado to load the bases with nobody out. Carrillo got out of the inning allowing just one run thanks to help from his defense. After getting Daryl Jones to fly out to shallow left, Jose Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. Alvarado was thrown out trying to advance to second base to end the inning and stop the rally.

Peoria answered right back in the bottom of the inning after Derek Schermerhorn started the inning off with a bunt base hit. He then advanced on a wild pitch on a strike out by Wellington Castillo. Nate Samson hit a line drive single to left field but Schermerhorn was thrown out at the plate. Matt Camp delivered a two out single to score Samson and tie the game 2-2.

Carrillo could not hold the lead in the top of the sixth inning. The Swing loaded the bases for the second time in the game with no outs. Steven Hill led off with a single followed by a walk to Christian Reyes that ended the night for Carrillo. Schweitzer picked up his second hit of the night to load the bases against Jeremy Papelbon. Jaime Landin grounded out to the pitcher to stop a run from scoring and gave the Chiefs their first out in the inning. Papelbon then struck out Dorn but issued a walk to Lopez to give the Swing the lead again at 3-2. Quad Cities tacked on another run on an RBI single by Alvarado that scored Schweitzer to make it 4-2 but Canzler threw out Landin at the plate to end the inning.

The Chiefs continued to battle back off Herron in the sixth inning. Jim Adduci started the inning with a single and ended up at third base with two outs. Lalli came up with another two out base hit for the Chiefs to score Adduci to make it 4-3. Schermerhorn doubled down the left field line for his second hit of the night to give the Chiefs runners at second and third with two outs. The two out hitting continued after Castillo drove a single into right center field to score both Lalli and Schermerhorn and give the Chiefs the lead back at 5-4.

The bullpen once again could not hold the lead for the Chiefs in the seventh inning. Matt Maradeo started the inning and gave up a lead off walk to Jones. Ramirez followed with a double to left field to score Ramirez from first to tie the game 5-5. Casey Lambert came into the game and gave up a single to Landin to put the Swing on top 6-5.

Quad Cities loaded the bases for the third time in the game in the ninth inning. Hill doubled with one out off Casey Lambert. Christian Reyes then walked followed by an infield single off the bat of Schweitzer loaded the bases. For the second time in the game, a Chiefs pitcher walked in a run with the bases loaded to make it a 7-5 game and end the night for Lambert. Michael Bartek gave up a single to Dorn to score the second run of the inning to make it 8-5.

Maradeo took the loss in 2/3 innings of work in which he allowed two runs on one hit while walking one and striking out one. Carrillo worked five innings and allowed three runs on five hits and walked four batters. Papelbon worked one inning and gave up a run on three hits and struck out one batter. Lambert was charged with two runs on three hits in 1 2/3 of work. Bartek gave up one hit in 2/3 of an inning.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Blake Lalli (DH) - Lalli went 2-for-4 with a single and a double on the night and drove in two of the Chiefs five runs. Lalli now has 12 multi hit games and he is the only Chief from the opening day roster that is hitting over .300 (.310).

Drew Rundle launched a long home run over the right field fence in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Boise Hawks beat the Yakima Bears Thursday night 14-13. It was three hours and 17 minutes of baseball madness at Memorial Stadium as the two teams combined for 22 hits off 10 pitchers, shared seven errors, there were four Hawk balks, the last of which resulted in Boise manager Tom Beyers and shortstop Dylan Johnston being ejected, four Hawks home runs, two four run innings for the Hawks and a six run inning (which included four errors) for the Bears.

In addition to Rundle's home run, his second, the Hawks got long balls from Dylan Johnston (1), Josh Donaldson (3) and Ty Wright (3). Billy Mottram, who started the game as the DH, had five RBI's in his first two at bats. Inserted into the defense at second base in the ninth inning, he made a great stop in the 10th then threw Clayton Conner out at the plate to keep the game tied.

Bill Moss who came into the game in the ninth to play shortstop made two sparkling plays in the ninth inning to help keep the game tied.

The tie was broken for good with Rundle's home run in the 10th and a crowd of 2542 left the stadium with the Hawks knocking on the door of first place in the Eastern Division of the Northwest League.
