Cubs 2B who have been more valuable than Sanchez this year:

Derosa

Fontenot

Theriot

We can officially revoke Larussa's "genius" status for picking Sanchez.

Every team needs an All Star representative.

Stupid rule? Yes

Stupid pick? Not necessarily. He really saved LaRussa's a** from having to play Pujols at 3rd due to Cabrera's injury.

Although I think Nady was more "deserving" as the only Pirate. Him or Gorzellany

Wow. Still bitter over the series loss last week?

Hard to be bitter when your team is actually in the playoff race.

And that makes it sound like you think Sanchez was the most deserving Pirate to go, which for your sake, I pray is not the case.

I never said that. But, to say those three guys are more deserving? THat sounds bitter. Let me ask: Which one of them would you NOT trade straight up for Sanchez?

Incidentally, Snell & Gorzo certainly deserved to go more, and Freddy will be the first one to tell you that.

Fair enough, although I'd probably be hard pressed to trade DeRosa straight up (and he has had a better year than Sanchez this season). The more deserving comment sounded a lot more like fan bias than bitterness to me though.

Also, props on living at wherever you live in the lovely city of Philadelphia.

All three have been more productive offensively than Sanchez this year, and by your own estimation, Sanchez has been absolutely horrendous at 2B this season.

Sanchez produced enough offense to be a top 7 third baseman last year. So far this year, he ranks 26th in VORP for 2nd basemen. That's not good.

If the game is supposed to be meaningful, Sanchez shouldn't even be considered as an option.

I'm just over City Line Ave. from where you are.

I Don't think I said Horrible at second. Certainly not good. Getting better, to be sure, though. Remember, he's never played there on a regular basis before this year.

Track his average month to month.

If you were the Cubs GM in '03, we'd have gotten a hell of a lot more for Aramis.

And yet the Cubs are still very much in the playoff race while the Pirates are still pretty much out of it. Man I'll sure feel dumb if my team with a way bigger payroll only does a little bit better than them but makes the playoffs. Whatever was I thinking!?

frankly, i'll find it pretty pathetic if the cubs win 88 games or whatever, even if they do win the division. i'll obviously be very happy that they're in the playoffs, as anything could happen, but shooting for 90 wins is a pretty pathetic goal.

All things being equal and the Cubs having that payroll advantage, I'd agree. But from this point forward shooting for a 46-29 finish isn't too pathetic.

no, i'd be very happy if they finished 46-29.

It's the first half of the season (save the last 15ish games) that is the disappointing part.

Keep something in mind folks. We're only 4.5 games behind you. And, we're starting to click.

Two major differences going forward: LaRoche is starting to hit, Mahalom is starting to pitch. Also, our bullpen is melting down a lot less often.

We're still a long shot. But, we're not going quietly into that Night, er, I mean abyss that's the NL Central basement.

Actually, we're not going there at all. I could see us finishing second or third.

Will be an interesting second 1/2!

Oh Yeah - Freddy is starting to heat up, too. And, he's getting the knack of playing second!

Posted

the cubs have scored 396 runs and allowed 368, for a projected record of 46-41.

the pirates have scored 367 runs and allowed 427, for a projected record of 38-50.

also, according to bp's 3rd order wins and losses, the cubs should be 47-40 (a game out of first!), while the pirates should be 35-53.

the pirates still suck.

Yeah, but they're still the Pirates.
