In all honesty, I can see a situation where Lou says "Look Alex, you have more money than you can ever spend in you life time now....with new ownership, we will pay you what we can, just come on in and lets get some things going here in Chicago. We will get you that ring."

Boras will have none of it I'm sure.

The union might have something to say about that too.

I don't think the union would have the right to complain. If he chooses to opt out he's voiding the remainder of his current contract and whatever he negotiates with the Cubs (or any other team) would be a completely new contract, not a renegotiation of an existing contract.

Following the buzz about possible destinations if fun, but I'd be more interested if there were any scuttlebutt about what position he'd prefer to play. I wouldn't be surprised if he opts out to go to a franchise that only can pay him, but that will let him move back to SS. I have no insight as to which position he prefers more, but I'd be surprised if he didn't at least have a preference between the two.

Also, the talk from these sports radio guys that "don't count out the Cubs, provided their ownership situation is taken care of" is a total flake in my opinion. A new owner isn't going to pony up $85-100 mil for Zambrano and $125-160 mil for A-Rod, I don't care who it is. Especially not coming off a mediocre season, if in fact we hover at or just above .500 the rest of the way.

[swallows huge grain of salt] Joe Morgan was on the Dan Patrick Show, and he stated that he "knows" ARod wants to go back to SS, b/c "SS & CF are marquee positions, and once a player is there, they never truly want to play another position." FWIW, Morgan also said ARod will go to Anaheim if he opts out. He also said that scuttlebutt amongst the other AllStar players is that ARod will indeed opt out. [regurgitates said grain of salt]

Regardless of his current contract, the union is in the business of not letting players sign contracts for significantly less than they are worth because it negatively affects other players in their contract discussions.

I agree with you to a degree. However, look at Aramis. He left a lot of money on the table to return to the Cubs.

I never said that the Cubs should lowball him. If somehow the Cubs could come up with a competitive offer. Maybe slightly below the lowest contract offered. If he accepts, then that is his choice, the Union can't say squat.

Unless I'm mistaken, Boras is his agent - that guy RARELY IF EVER leaves any money on the table. IMHO, ARod will go to a team where:

A - He gets the most money

B - He gets to play SS

A guy doesn't hire Scott Boras as his agent if $ isn't the prime motivation

Depends on the Yankees. If they make the postseason AND he plays well, I think he stays in NY, maybe threatening to opt out so he can get a renegotiated deal. If the Yanks miss the playoffs or ARod starts playing badly (relatively speaking, bad for ARod is an OPS below .900), then he may opt out. I don't think it's likely he ends up with the Cubs given that the ownership transition will be going on. He would have to wait until January just to negotiate, and risk a very large pay cut because he waited so long to sign. If he really REALLY wants to play for Lou, then I guess he'd probably just opt out, state that he wants to play for the Cubs, and take a one-year deal knowing he'll get another bite at the FA apple when Lou's contract is up. I think the likeliest possibilities are ARod going to the West Coast to play for either the Angels or the Giants (via trade or opt out, anybody's guess).

Steve Stone was on WSCR today, saying ARod is opting out. Not sure where he got his info, but he wasnt saying might, he said its for sure. Also said both Chicago teams would be at the front of the line.

Steve Stone doesn't guess. Steve Stone knows. He will tell you what is going to happen in the future, and if it doesn't happen that way, it's because the universe messed up, not Steve Stone.

Stoney's reliable. If we don't get Z, we sure as hell better get A-Rod.

It all depends on what "pay you what we can" means. He's to be owed 81M over the next three years. While ARAM did most likely leave money on the table there are definitely differences. ARAM opted out of his contract with 2 years 22.5M left with an 11M mutual option (which definitely would have kicked in based on games played). So basically, ARAM had 3 years and 33.5M left. He opted out for MORE money and a LONGER contract. His next three years which would have been 33.5 are now 37.65 with another year at 15.75 and a player and mutual option.

Translate that to AROD and we are talking 3 years 90M, plus another year at over 30M and option years.

ARAM was only rumored to have other offers, ARod definitely will if he hits the open market. Offers which have to be sent to the commissioners office. Also ARod is the most visible athlete in baseball. The ARAM's Schmidts and Wolfs don't get the attention (scrutiny) that an ARod discount would get.

If by "pay you what we can" means 5 years 150M, then I think a deal could be struck.

MORP has him being worth 83M 07-11, but I'm guessing that will change if he keeps outpacing his projected OPS by 160 points this year. Additionally, moving from 3B to SS (as long as he can play it competently) would increase his MORP significantly as well.

Given the way the market may be going with Ichiro, I don't think 5/150 would be a bad deal for ARod.

right, right, i know...it is silly

call me crazy, but i really do not like a-rod at short...at all...

first off...if, by the miraculous grace of divinity, we can acquire that man-god called rodriguez...well then, why not use dlee as a tasty piece of talent bait...?

let aramis and alex figure out who is going to be 3rd and who is going to be 1st...

short-stop is a bit tricky, but the pieces will fall into place...

You realize that ARod is still the best SS on his current team, right? Why would you not play him at SS in Chicago?

If Ichiro is going to get what his extension is rumored to be, I'm almost certain Arod will opt out.

Exactly. The Ichiro extension almost guarantees that ARod won't be sacrificing anything to be covered in the 2011-2014 period.

I must say that would be enjoyable to watch. I wonder if the Yanks will try to deal him this season hoping he'll like the team he's playing for and stay away from Boston.

i am not totally against a-rod at SS, but i do think other avenues could be pursued...

boston fans hate rodriguez...i would probably be more surprised to see him end up there than in chicago...

i liked his pearly white shoes...i just like the man...the myth...the legend...

and, i will soil myself if he somehow comes to the cubs
