This is the first of many trainwrecks this organization will endure courtesy of Zell.

including the sale

The quicker the sale, the better. If he has no interest in locking up Zambrano, his interest isn't the well-being of the Cubs. I'm encouraged by the name of the new potential buyer.

Wait so I just got home. Why did Zell veto this and why does he have the power? Is Jones still gonna be traded eventually?

All of us are wondering the same thing.

If Zell has this much control over the Cubs, shouldn't he have to divest himself of his interest in the Sox? This sounds like a conflict to me.

yea, seriously....if he can veto trades that the cubs are tryin to make then he should def not be involved with the white sox and their second rate organization. he shouldn't have any say at all on this...

i think he realizes jones sucks and wants him to stay

Zell has influence because there is probably an agreement on the asset ratio for his stock price. If the Cubs are sending $7-8 mil out, that has an impact. He vetoes, saying it violates the terms of his agreement of sale.

Ostensibly, it would affect the value of his stock. In the grand scheme of things, this is probably true to an extent. It should be irrelevant given the total value of the Trib and the future value of the Cubs.

In other words? Dadgum right this is under protest!

So what's Hendry's next step? Does he have to include a decent prospect to go along with Jacque so he doesn't have to eat so much salary? Take on an undesirable contract from someone else?

well...my birthday just took a decidedly large turn for the worse...i was seriously contemplating typing something in really really large letters and risking getting banned!!!!!

in other words...this is about the biggest pile of BS these eyes have ever seen!!!!

Zell just passed Fielder on my list

This is bizarre. I mean, if the Cubs didn't pay Jones' entire contract, then they'd save money right? Why would Zell object to something that would probably save him money? This seems to defy all logic and reason? He can't possibly believe the team will be more valuable with Jones than without.

This offseason is going to be painfull.

The offseason? How about right now? We're conceivably an injury or two away from seeing Bo Hart in the lineup because Zell won't let us take on any significant salary.

it depends on when the cash would change hands. For instance if the Cubs picked up all of it this season and none of it next season, the deal doesnt make sense for him.

The deal collapsed, however, when incoming Cubs owner Sam Zell – who is in the process of purchasing a controlling interest in the Tribune Co., which publishes the Sun-Sentinel – vetoed the hefty cash exchange.

Doesn't sound like Hendry's fault.

Ahhh, cash flow problems. They can't or don't want to pay the cash all at once. Now I see. I don't know how much any of this matters. It's clear that Lou doesn't like Jones and doesn't want to play him. If the Cubs can keep winning series, his teammates will ignore his bellyaching and he'll have to man up to the situation.

Yeah, I found something like that when I started backing through all these pages. It's not like Hendry is a great GM and Zell just vetoed a blockbuster deal. For all we know, Zell knows about every deal on the table for Jones and Hendry picked the stupidest one.

Although i'm not a Jones fan,I wouldn't make that trade.Theres no way i'd pay 6.6 of the 7.2 million hes owed. Floridas cost would be the league minimum for this year and next. Thats a nice deal for them. If the Cubs would have signed Jones for the league minimum instead of the 3/16, people wouldn't have come down on him so much. Hes not that bad an option as a 5th outfielder.

When you do a salary dump and get nothing in return, you're not supposed to pay the salary too.

Hopefully, closer to the deadline they can get a better deal from someone.

Somehow I feel Zell may hamstring our efforts to improve the team this year.

Damn Sox fan!

Yeah, so much for adding onto payroll like Hendry has said over and over again. And we're pretty much stuck with Jones if Zell won't let the Cubs eat his contract. Fun times.

As people have stated previously, I don't think this is Hendry's fault. And moreover, I don't think he knew about the inability to take on payroll until this deal. Talk about a wake-up call you don't want when your job is on the line.

How is this not Hendry's fault. He signed Jones to a stupid 3yr. contract that he can't get out from under unless he pays virtually all of it for another team. It's another poor move by a gm who's really a glorified scout (one that goes on instinct and little based on stats) who's in over his head. Beinfest was raking Hendry over the coals for the 3rd time --Willis deal, Pierre deal and now this. Zell was making both a financial and a baseball decision, in my opinion, by rejecting this deal. It made no sense. Just take a step back and really think about the scenario--pay a player almost 90% of his salary while he's playing for someone else and get little to nothing in return.

and like everyone's said, that beats paying him 100% of his salary and getting nothing in return.

it's not hendry's fault the trade got vetoed, but it is his fault that he gave jones a terrible contract.
