I posted this in the Jock thread but I feel it deserves its own thread. Mods, correct me (a.k.a. delete this) if I'm wrong.

Daily Herald[/url]"]If the Cubs don’t deal Jacque Jones, the impending cut could come from a crowded infield.

But rookie Mike Fontenot, who took grounders at shortstop Monday afternoon and had 5 hits in the game, isn’t going anywhere. Ryan Theriot likely is also safe despite his recent struggles at the plate.

Shortstop Cesar Izturis, who made his team-high seventh error Monday, could be a candidate for relocation.

Roast,

Izturis leaving is a real possibility. His defense has been overrated ever since he's come here. He's just isn't that good defensively. His bat obviously sucks so he's pretty much worthless. Hendry is real high on Font and Theriot and does not want to demote them to the minors. It also sounds like Fontenot was taking balls at SS yesterday. Let's hope this happens. It would be a great day getting rid of either Jones or Izturis but an even better one if both were gone. Addition by subtraction.

Who the hell would want him?

You got me. But as hoops pointed out, there are currently about 8 other ML shortstops who are getting on base less than Cesar. So maybe on of them?

Or maybe "relocation" is a euphemism for DFA.

As great as this would be, I simply don't see it happening.

I can. Izturis' contract is much easier to deal with than Jones if you have to DFA them. Both are expendable.

Fontenot seems to have pretty good range, but i've only seen him play a handfull of times. An IF of Ramirez, Fontenot, Derosa, Lee is pretty darn good.

Maybe so, but Hendry's never been one to just outright cut players that are making a big salary. Especially ones that he traded Greg Maddux for.

Who's playing short in this IF?

I'm not sure which one I'd like to see go the most. No really, I've been thinking about this for about 10 minutes and I have yet to come to a decision.

Probably J- no wait, Izturis. GAH! Can we not trade them both? Someone start a poll, I'm actually curious as to which one people like the least.

that would leave us with no true SS on the roster. Cendeno has been tearing it up at AAA for quite some time. We would probably need to call him up, but we need another pitcher...cut/trade izturis and jones?!?!

i'm not holding my breathe.

Yeah, I think if you deal Izturis Cedeno has to come up, and play. Then you still need to dump Jones for a pitcher. But the easiest move is still to just send Theriot down. He's been awful for a very long time now. I know they've said they want to keep him up, and they like him. But you aren't losing anything if you send him down for 10 days while this all gets straightened out (unless he's somehow out of options).

And just think, all we had to give up for Izturis 2 half seasons of subpar defense and .300 OBP was future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux.

Theriot doesn't deserve to be sent down. He's supplied satisfactory defense wherever he has played and his bat is more that good enough for a back up. he hit .300 throughout the minors and BP predicted a line of: .269/.330/.354. That's pretty solid for a utility guy in my opinion.

and if he's a starter or a utility guy, he's still better than izturis. Edited by weis21

But Izturis has a gold glove.

I know you were being sarcastic, and I posted this in the other thread, but I'll post it again.

There are 28 qualified SS in the league

-Izturis is 22nd in Fielding Percentage

-28th in Range Factor

-22nd in Zone Rating

I'm probably just dreaming here, but what about the Nats? With Guzman having season ending surgery yesterday, they might be the one team desparate enough.

Jim Hendry looks at those and doesn't know what they mean but what he does know is that Izzy has a Gold Glove.
