It's like the Cubs want to focus on trying to "fix" everything except the actual product on the field. It's crappy baseball feng shui.

And Barrett was/is a crappy baseball player, beyond the offense, he has no other redeeming quality. Poor base runner, can't catch the ball, called a poor game, cannot throw anyone out, if Bowen hits .220 but, provides more complete baseball. He'll increase the Cubs' chances of playing better baseball and perhaps, winning baseball.

wow, bad grammar and content.

Thanks, didn't know all postings were subject to grammar checks, I'll have to keep that in mind.

Would somebody tell me when they banned pitchers shaking the catcher off? Ive always thought it was legal, but apparently, the catcher is the only who has any say in any of this. Also I guess I can see your point about Barret being so bad, because our pitchers have pitched awesome since the trade and the team is 2-0.....oh wait nevermind they arent.

The argument that Barrett was a good hitter but a bad player ignores the fact that hitting is the most critical part of a player's responsibilities. If the team can't score runs, having a few less mental mistakes on the bases and behind the plate won't matter. Some people are greatly overrating intangible factors in their search for a scapegoat for this season, especially when it comes to the game calling myth. Barrett's CERA is 4.26 catching Cubs pitchers. Over the same time, his backups' CERAs are 4.32 combined. CERA is a completely and totally meaningless stat, and whether or not our pitchers felt more comfortable pitching to Barrett or the backup, they performed more or less the same.

Bowen's grit isn't going to save the team if he can't hit. Last night showed clearly that removing the intangible clubhouse cancer did very little to alieviate the mental mistakes the team makes.

Really?

How many games can you lose if you have perfect pitching and defense? (A: None)

Hitting is not, especially for a Catcher, a players primary function.

What's "perfect pitching a defense?" 27 strikeouts and no hits or walks? Your pitcher pitching a perfect game and the team not having any errors?

How many games can you lose if none of your batters ever records an out? (A: None, I suppose, since the first inning would last forever).

So you subscribe the Hendry's "I like players that can catch" philosophy?

To say that hitting is not a position player's primary function is absurd. Generally, the difference in runs scored between average and good hitters in greater than the difference in runs allowed between average and good fielders. Having a great fielding team with no hitting is a poor strategy.

And to correspond to your question, how many games can you win if you have no offense? (A: None).

Well, if Barrett was the cancer getting rid of him sure helped.

We're 0-2 in games without Michael Barrett.

No doubt. I'm not falling for this scapegoat crap anymore. The problem on this ballclub is, and ever has been, crappy management and GM'ing.

Blame Barrett? Alright, he's dense and was an idiot sometimes. Guess who's brainchild he was?

Answer that question, and you will have named the real problem with the Cubs at the moment.

We disagree.

First, defensive assessment is something that has not been finalized yet. The saber geeks are still working on it, although Mr James is toying with a few new formulas that he has put out over the last couple of years. So i will disagree with your assessment on run values until it can be truly quantified.

Second, the Catcher position is one of the exceptions to the fielding rule. You can check the Win Shares portion of the program to see that Catchers are one of 2 positions where defensive aptitude is rewarded with higher proportions.

So that's why we got Bowen. Our offense was too perfect. Now Bowen can make the outs, the games will end and Seligula will be happy with us.

The most elegant, succinct message about Cubs perfection that I have ever seen:

my goodness.

the total is actually 5 (tree, GR, sarcastic, soul and SSR).

but hey, that at least is closer than most of your comments in the realm of accuracy.

Getting sick of you trying to pick fights with me...this is the 4th time in 3 days.

then stop making stupid posts.

honestly, supporting your claim that defense is important by saying that if you pitch and defend perfectly you'll never lose is just ridiculous. you're going to get crap for it.

i was making a point that a bunch of you guys dont realize that its pitching and defense that win championships, not hitting.

maybe overly dramatic, but its a point that needs to get across that many people believe.

and just because people have differing view points btw doesnt mean you get to label anything idiotic. people agree and disagree, but this should be a realm for discussion not persecution, and defense does matter.

as for you Keener, this is something abuck and i have been going thru the last few days. he is upset b/c we traded his boy Mikey and holds me personally responsible. so he is doing nothing but trying to run me down. but hey whatever.

that's not at all the case. i've been commenting more on your posts lately because they have been increasingly ridiculous. starting right around the time when you adamently defended your incorrect definition of the word "myth."

this is a myth about a myth. i linked you the word and i used it correctly. again, you do not agree, which is ok b/c its your OPINION, not a fact.

either way, i wont be losing any sleep about it.
