BTW, I'll miss you Michael. From 2004-06 you were the best Cubs catcher I've ever followed. And you socked Pierzynski. You're my type of guy and it was a bummer that you had to go.

How can people criticize a deal they don't actually know all the details of?

I love this board.

The details are in...

The Padres have acquired Cubs catcher Mike Barrett today in a trade that will send Padres reserve catcher Rob Bowen and lower Single-A outfielder Kyler Burke to the Cubs.

San Diego also will get cash considerations in the deal, which the Padres expect will boost their offense and their catching depth.

FWIW, I think Barrett's trade value is a little overrated on here.

Because everyone on here would be the best GM in the history of the game.

I guess spewing hyperbole and arguing over facts not actually confirmed counts as talking baseball these days.

Come on, CT. Who else is going to be included that will make this trade different? We know it's Bowen and a prospect. The Padres system is a known quantity and it's not that strong. It's Barrett for Bowen and a mid-level prospect.

Linebrink's career as a closer has him completing a whopping 4 of 25 save opportunities.

He's replacing Dempster!!!

Why don't you go through and check how of those blown saves were in the 9th inning. Every middle reliever in baseball has the exact same numbers. Every time he's blown a lead in 8th, it counts as a blown save. On the other hand, he rarely (and maybe only 4 times) gets a chance to earn a save.

Someone pointed that out to me 7 pages ago, but thanks again.

I think we all saw Barrett being traded coming. IMO Lou forced this one on Hendry by stating his playing time was going to decrease over the next few weeks. His bonehead defense and base running plays were getting very old very quickly. My question is, When is Soto going to be ready to get a call up.

As has been noted several times already, there are conflicting reports.

Agreed. Barrett had a pretty high SLG this year, but he was still getting on base at Neifi-like levels. He really wasn't doing well this season, he's on the wrong side of 30, and he's a FA at the end of the year. If Bowen turns out to be as good as he looks and Barrett continues to decline, we may look back on this as a very good deal.

Kyler Burke is now being reported on a lot of new sites. Just punch his name into news.google.com. I guess this will be a wait and see trade, Burke is young enough and raw enough that he could be a great player for another team after the Cubs wreck his trade value and release him.

my guess is if the Cubs are taking a catcher in return, it's because they don't want to call up Soto. That, or one of Soto/Hill/Bowan is going to be involved in a subsequent deal.

I'm just guessing, of course.

I've seen the arguments for him spelled out...can you do the same from the other side?

Linebrink is a good reliever, but EPatt should have been used as part of a better package. Our offense is also now weaker than it was 24 hours ago.

This is why I don't trust Hendry to deal anyone, ever. He's the king of trading low.

Hendry did okay getting D-Lee and A-Ram for garbage.

So he got lucky with those (and Nomar at the time), but weigh his good trades/signings against his bad ones. See which way your scale tips.

So he got lucky with the guys that are the cornerstone of the team? Right. This thread doesn't need to become Hendry Sox Redux 998,776,432.

Cubs fans have no way to look at this objectively.

The Pirates were dumping. We just gave them the biggest pile of crap.

Lee we got lucky on. I have no clue how he pulled that off.

I will admit that he did a good job on the Nomar deal.

But compare Lee and Aram against Gerut, Lawton, Jones, Izturis, Neifi, Macias, Bynum, Dusty, etc. Overall has he made more good moves or bad ones?

Oh, well, that's settled then. I'm convinced.

Never mind guys, Bowen is a piece of **** and has no place here. Forget everything I said.

I'm sorry for waiting for sources I trust. While the reports of Bowen and Burke are true, this is not always the case. I'm just skeptical by nature I suppose and prefer to wait until I have actual confirmation before I go off making assumptions and thus avoid ranting about how Hendry's an idiot for trading EPatt.

You should have seen the teeth gnashing when we gave up Hee Seop Choi for Derek Lee.

Well you may be right but to get me to agree with a Cards fan, you'll have to get a pretty girl in your avatar like Wolf.

People are going to discuss things based on the information they have. No need to get your feathers all ruffled about it.

LOL what a surprise.

As I said earlier, he appears to have a little upside offensively. He had a big '03 in AA and AAA at 22, struggled while repeating AA in '04, in '05 he was at least adequate in AAA and he's had some solid moments in the big leagues.

I think he could give us close to the same offense as Barrett has thus far, while giving us better defense.
