I am thrilled Barrett isn't on the team. What we get back is really not that critical.

Barrett was a ball-player who happened to play catcher, and not very well. You cannot afford to have a catcher who doesn't do catcher stuff well. That was him.

Yeah, this is a bunch of crap but I'm not really interested in getting into it now that he's off the team. If you think a few past balls a year is worth having a black hole in your lineup, good luck with that.

He is a decent hitter

What does he do well as a catcher....

waiting.

How can people criticize a deal they don't actually know all the details of?

I love this board.

Linebrink is a good reliever, but EPatt should have been used as part of a better package. Our offense is also now weaker than it was 24 hours ago.

This is why I don't trust Hendry to deal anyone, ever. He's the king of trading low.

Hendry did okay getting D-Lee and A-Ram for garbage.

So he got lucky with those (and Nomar at the time), but weigh his good trades/signings against his bad ones. See which way your scale tips.

So not only do we give up Barret but we get a crappy catcher and prospect AND give cash to them! Another work of art from Jimbo.

no, it's reported that the Padres are giving the cash

Not according to the link I posted a minute ago from SD.

The trade is Barret and cash for Bowen and Kyler Burke. We got jobbed.

The official details are still all over the place. If you want to decide which to believe, fine. Doesn't make it so at this time.

The details are pretty much out man. What exactly is the point of your post? besides knock this board?

Because everyone on here would be the best GM in the history of the game.

I guess spewing hyperbole and arguing over facts not actually confirmed counts as talking baseball these days.

While I'll agree that I'm glad he's gone, you can't trade a player with his offensive ability just for the sake of it. Not on this team, anyway. We're not good enough offensively to do that.

I maintain that I hope there's a follow up move here that upgrades our RF or SS situation.

+1

We're gonna miss that bat in this lineup and we'll now be relying on a plethora of backup and inexperienced catchers.

So we dumped a good offensive catcher who is below average on defense, for a catcher that sucks on both offense and defense and some garbage prospect and cash?

Yeah, Hendry is the worst GM in the game.

At least wait until something official says what the trade actually is before unleashing your venom.

Why would anyone do that??? We had projected lineups 20 minutes ago.

It's a trade made by Jim Hendry. Odds are that he f-ed it up somehow.

Exactly. There might be an extra gargage prospect here, or some extra cash there...but the bottom line is the Cubs got their ass kicked on this trade.

Barrett is basically a 4 month rental at this point, and he's got a long way to go offensively to make up for his lack of defense this year. If they can get a young catcher with some upside and a prospect for him, that's fine by me. Whether you happen to think defense in a catcher is overrated or not (and I tend to go with the opinion of a Greg Maddux on such matters) the opinions that count are the ones in the pitching staff, and they obviously don't like working with him.

If it IS Barrett for Bowen/Burke...meh. If Bowen really is good on defense, then he's definitely our new best catcher and I'll be happy if we can get someone who gets on base and plays good D behind the plate, especially considering Barrett wasn't coming back and was having a bad year. Burke is a terrible, no-good, awful prospect and I was hoping that high-level pitching prospect talk was true.

I don't think this is that bad a deal. The offense needed to be upgraded at the deadline before this deal was made and it still does.

Linebrink's career as a closer has him completing a whopping 4 of 25 save opportunities.

He's replacing Dempster!!!

Why don't you go through and check how of those blown saves were in the 9th inning. Every middle reliever in baseball has the exact same numbers. Every time he's blown a lead in 8th, it counts as a blown save. On the other hand, he rarely (and maybe only 4 times) gets a chance to earn a save.

That Nomar and Murton trade worked out at the time. There's no NLCS without Matt Clement.

So he got lucky with the guys that are the cornerstone of the team? Right. This thread doesn't need to become Hendry Sox Redux 998,776,432.

Cubs fans have no way to look at this objectively.

This is from a scouting report on Bowen 6 years ago-obviously the offense has probably changed a little bit, but the defensive probably has not:

A switch-hitter, he has a better swing lefthanded but most of his power comes from the right side. Bowen is one of the best defensive players in the organization. He demonstrates advanced receiving skills, plus the arm and quick release to deter basestealers.

I don't mind Bowen at all. He's apparently a strong defensive catcher who is patient and has some power. His home runs should improve when he goes from Petco to Wrigley. If he even puts up the numbers he did last year (which this year he's been a lot better than that) he'll be an upgrade at what the Cubs have had so far this year, and he is cheap for the next couple years. Plus then you add in the fact that there are tensions between some pitchers and Barrett, and I think this is a solid deal.
