like for the Floyd option doesn't vest reasons

don't like because stacking the lineup with right handed hitters against lefties doesn't work, and is part of the reason the Cubs struggle so much against the 'soft-tossing lefties.'

Its better than putting a punchless Floyd, Jones or Pie up against a lefty. Those guys have NO SHOT against lefties.

yeah 1000 PAs spread over what? 9 or 10 years? consistent play against them. for a guy who has done it forever like jones theres probably something there but to baby pie against lefties hurts his development too much. its utterly [expletive]. how do you expect to learn how to hit a curve from a lefty if hes sitting in the dugout

yes, that's about 100 per year, which isn't a small amount. How many LHP do you think there are in every rotation, three or four? Your argument that Jones could learn how to hit lefties is idiotic.

He pretty much acknowledged that there's probably something to the argument that Jones just can't hit lefties in his post.

He makes a very good point with regard to Pie.

okay i misunderstood his argument about jones. With Pie it's true... especially since the alternative is Pagan, who's certainly not going to rake against LHP. The reward for Pagan over Pie is outweighed by the advantage of having Pie continue to get ABs against big-league LHP. If he turns out to be like Jones -- incompetent against LHP -- then eventually you'll have to platoon him. But being as he's supposed to be the CF of the future, you have to give him the chance to become a good player in all facets of the game.

Jones has no shot, but Pie we don't know yet, and Floyd has an OPS near .800 in his career against lefties.

That gives a clue that Pagan will be the one to go when Ramirez gets back. They'll end up using DeRosa as the 5th OF (against LH's) and then have a combination of Fontenot, Theriot, and Izturis in the IF. It definitely is our best lineup against left-handers.

Wouldn't it make more sense to send our 13th pitcher down when Ramirez is ready? Pagan is useful as a late innings defensive replacement, something that none of the Cubs other reserve outfielders have going for them.

Ramirez is going to be available after Ward. I think the 13th pitcher will go down when Ward comes back, and then Pagan will go down for Ramirez.

about 30 percent of his PAs if he played every day and wasn't pinch hit for would come against southpaws. over the course of his career 22 percent have. Im not saying he could learn. Im saying if he faced them more often hed get better at hitting them. Im using that to say that Pie shouldnt be babied against them. In the first three years of Jones' career he faced lefties just 12 percent of the time.

Im just trying to argue that how can Pie learn to hit ML lefties from the dugout. Is that really bad? Yes Jones is worse against them. If he faced them every possible chance should we expect him to improve?

I have a couple theories about the Cubs lack of success against soft tossing lefties.

first, think Mike Remilinger. often soft tossing lefties are change up pitchers who have reverse splits.

second, a pitcher doesn't have to change his patterns to get batters out if he has early success and only has to face hitters from one side of the plate. all the pitcher has to do is throw darts at the outside corner and watch the Cubs hitters ground out to shortstop.

third, it leaves your bench without righties, thus screwing you late in the game when you need to pinch hit as the opposing manager can bring in his loogies to get your pinch hitters out.

Super news. Those brains are finally a workin'.

=D>

Edit: Mark DeRosa is actually becoming one of my favorite Cubs. I love his play and his demeanor. And I have a feeling he's a great guy too.

Honestly, I'm pretty content with Soriano, Pie, and Floyd most days. with DeRosa, Fontenot and Theriot taking turns playing SS and 2B

I think this is pretty much what Lou is thinking. Getting DeRosa in right keeps Jones out of the lineup (how useless is Jones with Floyd playing well) and both Jones/Floyd out of the lineup against LHP. I would bet we'll still see a lot more of Izturis than we would prefer, but the fact he's not starting everyday is at least something.

I don't think Fontenot plays SS, although for some reason Iowa's roster lists him as one. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ibp&cid=451&stn=true&sid=t451

Are there any Cubs fans in Iowa that watch the Iowa team and could fill us in on whether Fontenot can play SS and how much?

You know, I am really surprised to be saying this, but I really hope Floyd stays healthy just to keep Jones out of the lineup.

Hopefully this spells the end of Jacque Jones' Cubdom.

:pig:

I think Jones will be dealt. Hendry found a way to deal Hundley when he was forced into it by fans and media pressure. The Cubs will pay most of his salary next season, but the fans hate him, he hates the fans, the media criticizes him, he whines about playing time, his average is below .250 and falling like a rock, where have we heard this before?

I'm sort of hoping he blows up in some interview and calls the fans a bunch of idiots or something of the sort to force Hendry's hand even sooner. As things stand now, I think Hendry is waiting around hoping for a lot of other team's outfielders to get hurt, and will keep waiting till near the deadline.

his quotes in the Pierre article come close. essentially what he says is he doesn't know how a player can keep playing hard with the fans on them all the time and how much he admired Pierre for doing so.

who cares about whether the fans have anything to do with his suckitude or not, just keep yapping about it Jacque. Chicago's run better than you out of town before.
