Wow.

LMAO. Z has vowed to throw 98 mph to quiet all the people speculating that he has arm problems.

Ridiculous. Z is nuts.

Zambrano's guarantee

Zambrano has vowed to throw 98 m.p.h. Wednesday to prove to skeptics he has no shoulder problems. This could lead to Zambrano overthrowing in an attempt to make a point, though Piniella seemed oblivious to the guarantee.

"I'm not concerned," Piniella said. "You all hear things I'm not aware of."

Zambrano has been throwing up to the mid-90s and is coming off an outing in which he gave up 13 hits with no strikeouts.

"He should just go out and pitch," Piniella said. "What's important is he gets people out and wins games."

How about promising to drop that 5.62 ERA down a bit? At least he's got his head in the right place.

L. O. L.

The man is absurdly maddening on the baseball field this year, yet always seems to please with outrageous quotes.

Dear Z. No one cares how hard you throw. All that matters is whether or not you throw strikes and get batters out.

P.S. Stop serving up gopherballs. Your name is at the top of the list in that category.

Is this an editorial? Because Sullivan's editorializing quite a bit here:

"This could lead to Zambrano overthrowing in an attempt to make a point,"

and later

"Barrett risked injuring himself and others by venturing out where he doesn't really belong."

These are Sullivan's opinions, but aren't stated as such and the article is written in "news-update" format, not editorial format.

hahaha, I love Z.

i don't understand why people love z for stuff like this.

Because he doesn't follow the "book" on what to say to the media, or how to act in general.

It's endearing.....to a point. When he starts freaking out during games because he's sucking? That's when it loses its charm for me.

i've been annoyed by his antics for a while now. needless to say, for me, this year has removed any charm he previously had.

This knucklehead better throw strikes and get outs. Leave the macho stuff at home! Seriously, his head isn't in the game. Zambrano is at his best in the low to mid 90s so his ball sinks. 98mph for him isn't ideal.

We need him to pitch well tomorrow and not try to prove a point to the media.

His effectiveness is the bottom line for me. The entire side circus (not counting punching the catcher) would be fine if he were in form of previous years. Given his season so far though, his mere existence (EDIT - on this team) is already offensive, and the antics greatly compound it.

In 2004, I remember, he was the most-liked player on this board.

He also happened to be pitching like a guy that deserved the Cy Young award.

...and not saying he would win the Cy Young and then pitching like Marquis circa 2006.

Im still on his side.

Me too. I hope next year when we replace Z with some washed up piece of garbage everyone remembers these type posts.

As I've been saying now, the guy needs to grow up. It was cute when he was, you know, good when he was saying his garbage. Now that he can't find the strike zone for his life, it makes him look like a total tool.

I just find this comment absolutely unreal because he was only throwing 89-90 his last couple of starts. Now since the media is questioning if he is hurt or not, he's going to throw 98? Why the hell couldn't he throw 98 for the first two months of the season? He's not all there.

Hes had good years pretty much ever year. He struggles for 2 months and cubs fans turn on him?

That's about par for the course with this board.

ERA+

Last 5 years in reverse chronolgical order:

136

131

165

136

110

But yea, lets throw him under the bus. We as a fan base seem to excel at that.

For clarification, I wouldn't mind trading him, for the right stuff (though that won't happen in his contract year).

Um because no one should have WANTED him to? He's not good at that velocity. 93 is optimum for his sinking fastball. But he's young, and he wouldn't be the only one to react irrationally when he perceived his manhood as being challenged.
