Cardinals Receive RHP Wellemeyer

POSTED: 4:27 pm PDT May 15, 2007

Los Angeles, CA -- (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday were awarded the contract of right-handed pitcher Todd Wellemeyer on an outright waiver claim from the Kansas City Royals.

Wellemeyer, who was designated for assignment last week by KC, was 0-1 with a lofty 10.34 ERA in 12 games this season.

Originally drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fourth round in 2000, Wellemeyer was solid out of the bullpen for the Royals last season when he posted a 3.63 ERA in 28 appearances. He had been with Florida but was claimed off of waivers by the Royals in early June.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals claimed reliever Todd Wellemeyer off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday, and plan to add him to their roster this weekend.

Wellemeyer, a 28-year-old right-hander, was 0-1 with a 10.34 ERA in 12 games for the Royals this season, allowing 25 hits in 15 2-3 innings. He has a career record of 6-8 with a 5.65 ERA.

"We've always liked his arm. We've always thought he was someone we'd be interested in acquiring," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said before Tuesday night's game at Los Angeles. "We'll just put him out there, break him in, see what we've got."

I'll never forget Todd's first big league outing. All downhill from there.

K'd the side vs. the Brewers.

can he be sent to the minors, or does he have to go with the big league club?

To the 40 man and the 25 unless the Cards can turn around and get him through waivers themselves.

Where is it written that anyone with ML experience needs to be picked up even though there's probably a dozen guys in the system that could fill the role?

but how many pitchers in the Cardinals system have shoulders like wellemeyer? my guess is zero!

There were some girls in my high school who had some weird fan crush on Todd Wellemeyer. I have no idea why. One of the girls brothers was in the Reds farm system, so I have no clue why they would have some sort of crush on a dude who was in the Cubs farm system.

FTW, IIRC

Actually Farnsworth got the win and Wellemeyer got the save.

he can't be worse than Anthony Reyes

Reyes?

Kip Wells and Adam Wainwright are on the Cardinals and you throw Reyes out there?

Reyes has been the most unlucky pitcher in baseball.

1.17 whip

33/13 k:bb

7.6 k/9

All way too good for a 5+ era.

Not to mention the grand total of 8 runs we have scored in his 7 starts.

Yeah, that was that 16 or 17 inning game where our pitchers threw a ton of K's.

I miss those days.

Yeah, I wasn't sure what Jocketty was thinking messing around with Wells. Maybe they'll start getting something from him, I don't know. Everywhere else he's been the guy has done nothing but disappoint. His WHIP hasn't been below 1.5 since '03, which was the last time he posted an ERA+ over the 100 mark. He's now 30, no spring chicken -- hope would appear to be fading for some kind of turnaround in his career.

As for Todd, he was reasonable as late as last year, I'm thinking it's not all that bad a gamble to take. I'm sure expectations are low anyway, he'll probably be making peanuts and a pack of marlboro.
