ESPN Insider

They reached May labeled as the same old recycled Cubbies, even though there are only two position players in the same place as a year ago and three-fifths of the starting rotation has changed.

...the Cubs' lineup will produce enough runs to contend, even if it is a little right-handed imbalanced. Ryan Theriot, Mark DeRosa and Cesar Izturis give them flexibility in the middle infield, and Michael Barrett is a reliable, solid everyday catcher.

...the most important aspect to this team is the starting pitching... They believe Zambrano will get going and eventually signed. Ted Lilly is solid. Larry Rothschild has helped Jason Marquis rediscover his stuff and self-confidence, as evidenced by five quality starts in six outings, a 2.09 ERA and a 1.83 GB/FB ratio. Angel Guzman will soon be in the rotation.

And the ace, for now? Rich Hill. Rothschild gave him a copy of Harvey Dorfman's "The Mental ABC's of Pitching" and got Hill in touch with a legendary sports psychologist who has helped countless players... Since going into the rotation full-time on Aug. 20, Hill has the best ERA of any starter in the game (1.87) with 56 hits and 87 strikeouts in 90 2/3 innings.

"When they get Soriano, Lee, Ramirez and all those guys hitting together, they are going to be very good," says Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty. "It will come."

I have to agree. Even when they were struggling I could see that they were just a few breaks here and there away from winning most of the games. I'm not declaring them the NLC champs or anything based off of this recent good play, but when Ramirez and Barrett start playing a little better, and Howry, Zambrano, and Eyre start pitching the way we all know they can, this will be a team to reckon with.

I have made my random bi-monthly appearance here on NSBB. Time to vanish again. BYE! :o

Gammons is one of the few people on ESPN that I like... Probably because he favors the Cubs so much.

I never heard that stuff about Hill before, interesting.

Yeah, I'm not very surprised by that. In just about every quote, Hill mentions about his change mentally is the reason he started to succeed. It's a common thing that pitchers say, but Hill talks about it so often that I knew that he must have been working specifically at that.

Only thing I see in the clips posted is the 2 position players part, but it's technically true as he said a year ago, and a year ago Lee was on the DL Jones was in RF, and Izturis was in LA. Kind of a stupid point to make even if it's technically true.

I agree with Gammons. I think the best is about to come, and hopefully it'll be for a long period of time.

** Perferably all the way through the WS.

Nope, it was correct because it was the only thing that I saw as wrong.

Reviewing it, the Rich Hill date is off, likely because he looked at his log and saw him pitch in relief in that one marathon game.

Correct again.

Can you just explain what he got wrong?

When he say's Zambrano will eventually be signed, where is he getting that information from? I am just currious, becuase I thought they were not negotiating durring the season.

Im convinced Gammons pulls a lot of his "inside" information out of his ass. Or, at least, 95% is speculative.

i would go along and say 99.9%

Not in this instance necessarily, but there's a lot of misinformation floated out there from front offices.

Ironically, this is just you speculating.

You're speculating that I'm speculating.

Just as you're speculating that I'm speculating about your speculation in regards to Peter's speculating.

One day Chuang Tzu and a friend were walking by a river.

"Look at the fish swimming about," said Chuang Tzu, "They are really enjoying themselves."

"You are not a fish," replied the friend, "So you can't truly know that they are enjoying themselves."

"You are not me," said Chuang Tzu. "So how do you know that I do not know that the fish are enjoying themselves?"

Without looking at the stats, I can say that I'll eat an alligator if Rich Hill has already thrown 90 2/3 innings.

he said since he came back last year, not this year.

Do I still have to eat an alligator?
