what are the odds hosmer slips to us?

Goldstein (BP) didn't think he'd slip out of the top 10 and wasn't similar to Porcello. Callis thought he'd slip but wouldn't slip as low as Detroit at 21. I really, really, really hope he falls to 19.

I'm honestly not as excited for Hosmer. This draft has a ton of very good 1Bs who will come cheaper, although they may not have quite as high of a ceiling. Justin Smoak and Yonder Alonso will probably be gone by the time the Cubs pick at 19, but here's a short list of potential 1Bs who should be available for the Cubs at 19 or later...

Brett Wallace

Ike Davis

David Cooper

Jeff Decker

Allan Dykstra

Jeremy Hamilton

Chase Davidson

Shane Peterson

Ricky Oropesa

Nate Recknagle

Conor Gillaspie

The money the Cubs could spend on Hosmer would, quite frankly, be better spent elsewhere.

This isn't like last year or the year before for me where I have my heart set on one guy. I'd like to see Shooter Hunt fall into the Cubs' laps, but I doubt that happens. The realistic guy I'd like to see the Cubs tab at this point is Jake Odorizzi, but we'll see.

I don't think Jake O will be around by the time the Cubs pick.

He's not in the Top 10...so who knows? :D

This is one of those years where the Top 10 is relatively easy to pin down, but everything after that is a jumbled mess. I'll keep up hope!

I've seen a few mentions that the Dodgers like him but don't think he will make it to him at 15. The prep arms in this draft are all over the place...Mayo didn't have Melville in the first round in his mock draft while BA is very high on him.

PG Crosschecker at one point had him as the top prep arm in the country (unsure if they still do). Sickels didn't even have him in his Top 10 prep arms, much less his Top 30 overall. Brewerfan has him ranked at #18.

I think a lot of this depends on how much teams would be willing to pony up for Cole and Meyer and whether Ethan Martin and Aaron Hicks end up hitting or pitching.

When it comes to the draft, I'll take what PG Crosschecker has to say over Sickels nearly everytime. Sickels is very late to the Jake O bandwagon but it sounds like he's joining the party.

Gary (Buffalo Grove, IL): Who do you think the Cubs will draft?

Keith Law: Heard them linked to a couple of two-sport guys, Casey Kelly and Jake Odorizzi, which makes sense given Tim Wilken's longtime affinity for multi-sport players.

Sounds reasonable.

I've heard some recent reports saying that Kelly is more likely to be drafted as a pitcher, although he is good enough at either P or SS to be drafted in the first.

I've heard it both ways...some reports saying he's more intriguing and has more upside as a RHP, but others say he's likely to be given a look at SS first.

For those in the know-

Is there a chance that Ben Soignier from UL-Monroe could get drafted? If so, in what round? He was named to the Louisville Slugger All-American team today and was just wondering what the scouts thought of him.

Based on net reports, the 2B Suire will likely get drafted ahead of Soignier, given that Suire is a senior sign and had a good Summer with wood.

What rounds would you guess for those two?

I didn't realize that raisin, thanks for writing that. Too many kids are just doing one sport when they are good at 2 or 3 due to this foolish playing year round thing.

I'd love to take credit for writing that but that was all Keith Law.

According to Arizona Phil, Oneri Fleita was at Fitch along with about 12 scouts today to work out 3B Brett Lawrie (Langley HS, BC, Canada) and SS Niko Vasquez (Durango HS, Las Vegas). Vasquez hit a 2-run HR in the extended spring training game.

This mock draft was passed along to me by an old friend of ours.

Not the first time I've seen Cole to the Cubs. He'd be a good high risk/high reward pick. Crawford...eh.

I doubt he goes sandwich but the last 2 weeks have been amazing for him - he's been taking pitches, making much better contact and (unsurprisingly) has gone on a tear.

There was an excellent fluff piece in the Sunday NY Times about Pedro Alverez. The kid sure does seem to have a good head on his shoulders.
