Milwaukee 133 runs scored, 116 runs scored against.

Cubs 127 runs scored, 98 runs scored against.

Milwaukee 18-9

Cubs 12-14

Cubs ran into some bad luck in April but if this keeps up things should be looking a lot better.

Just something to think about.

Try the past 98 years.

Well, not turning these stats into wins so far is going to come back and bite us, IMO. Are both Marquis and Lilly going to continue with such strong numbers? Granted the hitting should only improve with warmer weather though.

The really sad thing is the pitching is going to somehow come back down to earth, and by then we didn't win enough games in that span to make up for it.

Of the 3, Hill, Lilly and Marquis, they will all settle down, no longer posting WHIP's around and below 1.00.

Sad that we get otherworldly pitching magnificence for a month, and we throw it completely out the window.

Zambrano will also not have an ERA over 8, and Soriano will not be an unproductive outfielder, and the Cubs will also start winning a few games by 1 or 2 runs.

But Zambrano should significantly improve, our 5th starter spot can't get any worse, and the bullpen should get better as Lou figures out who he can trust in certain situations. I know those 3 guys have been pitching amazing and it won't continue, but Lilly and Hill should continue to pitch very good and Marquis might have turned things around. At worst, I see our pitching getting slightly worse while our offense getting much better (and more consistent).

i think it's been established that the cubs are the expected runs scored/runs against champs.

and while i'm certainly proud of them, and it does give hope for the future, it doesn't change the fact that the entire month of april (regardless of what their record should have been) was a disaster, and they're going to have to dig themselves out of a decent-sized hole.

And hopefully as the pitching comes down the offense starts to pick up more of the slack.

Hoefully, but the pitching seems to be overperforming more than the hitting is underperforming.

anyone have the pythagorean on what our record should be?

I'm guessing like 16-10

Yes, are pythagorean record is 16-10 right now. We have the biggest difference in the league at 4 games. The only two teams at at 3 game difference are the Yankees (who are 3 games under what they are supposed to be) and the Brewers (who are 3 games over what they are supposed to be).

Exactly. Hopefully Soriano is just starting to hit the crap out of the ball, and hopefully Barrett and Ramirez start hitting the ball well also.

the problem is that theory is only accurate over large sample sizes. over 26 games, all you can really conclude is that the cubs have lost some close games and won some blow outs.

My suggestion is to hope the Cubs have a good May -- something they are very capable of doing -- and then we can re-evaluate the situation come June 1. Yes, the Cubs had a terrible April. They lost several games in true Cub-like fashion, leading to much frustration in Cubdom.

It's still early, and if the Cubs can get on a roll, and they seem to be on right now, I think they can really make some headway.

I think the Cubs are the archetypal better-than-record, about-to-make-a-run team. We'll see, they're still the Cubs and they've lost games in ways that make me reluctant, but I think over the long haul of 162 they'll turn in a solid season. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I believe they are third in the majors in run differential. That bodes well, even this early.

While we're talking about this stuff, the last place Yankees are 10-14, but "should" be 13-11, as they've scored a ton of runs and gone 1-5 in 1 run games. I'm hoping like heck that they're real record doesn't catch up to that expected record, because I would love an October without Yankee baseball.

I'm sure hoping for Yankees in the postseason.

Please come back to NY, Roger.

Well, maybe the Yankees are the archetype I discussed. I'm not counting on them missing the playoffs -- though I do think this is one of the weaker teams they've had recently -- though it sure would be great. It's one thing when a basketball or hockey teams make the playoffs every year, but when a baseball team makes it every year when there's only four spots per conference, it becomes tiresome and redundant.

I thought, and still think, the Red Sox are the best team in the division and that the Yankees might be closer to the Blue Jays than the Sox, but probably not.
